Does it bite?

he recognises my scent as a trustworthy scent so he doesn't bite me but he bites other people if they mishandle him

Im guessing allmost every animal will defend itself if it feels threatened
Allso
Very cute
28
u/Tanto_yts Apr 09 '25
might come as a surprise but most of our native stag beetles species here in hong kong just let you mess around with them and don't bite at all. only one species here is actually known to bite humans

THATS COOL AS FUCK!! I would love to have a pet beetle it just makes me think of Kamen Rider Gatack (I don't expect you to know who that is). How did you get it? and what kind of responsibilities does owning a stag beetle come with that may differ slightly from other pets?
→ More replies (1)18
u/Tanto_yts Apr 08 '25
YESS!!!!!! beetles are quite well know here so there are many breeders and I got him from a local beetle shop. He eats sugary fruits and you just change his food every 2 days or so and change the substrate every 2 months. Owning a stag beetles differs from owning other pets because they're absolutely badass and people simply can't comprehend the coolness. In all seriousness tho, beetles are a gateway to appreciating insects and overcoming the fear of them for people who are scared of insects. I think it's great, I've kept beetles for almost 12 years now, as a kid I kept hercules beetles!
9
u/1Monky2Monky 16 Apr 09 '25
I still can’t get over how fucking badass and cool this is. I would love to have a pet beetle because A) I’ve never really been afraid of insects (apart from wasps those things scare the crap out of me) and
B) Beetles are my favourite kind of insects
I would especially love to have a Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle I would then just compare myself to Kamen Rider Kabuto (again I don’t expect you to know who that is) just another few questions:
-did The beetle hurt you at first, if so when did it stop doing that And get safe and comfortable around you?
-how much was it approximately?
-where are you where pet beetles are well known? Only place Ik of is Japan
btw I would give you more upvotes if I could but 1 will have to do
7
u/Tanto_yts Apr 09 '25
The beetle never hurt me, I cared for it since the day it left the post pupae dormant period so i was one of the first foreign scents it picked up and i was careful to not startle it
the larvae of the species goes for approx 10-20 usd here, the adults vary a lot and are usually quite expensive
I live in Hong Kong and a lot of the people here are animal enthusiasts so we have lots of different animals being captively bred, beetles being one of them
jrbs or kabutomushi only live a few months as adults, don't know if you know but if you're fine with that then go ahead!

Had a disabled African Bullfrog named princess. She had a paralyzed spine and only lived to 9 months. She was such a sweet heart! I hand fed her, warmed her water to make her comfortable, and even got her a specialized “spice” for frogs to make her happier.

i've got a colony of isopods :) i consider my plants my pets too, which is abnormal i think. I have a lemon cypress, two jade succulents, and a rubber fig!!!!!
13
u/Strange-Ad-9941 17 Apr 09 '25
Plants are alive and require care and attention just like animals, so it's really not that abnormal. Got names for your plants?
4
u/Active-Crow9087 Apr 09 '25
my rubber fig is name maeve, my jade succulents are named frankie and geepers (silly versions of MCR members names) and my lemon cypress is named mellow man (like the cypress hill member)

Critters that are large and have no noticeable hair are completely fine
The small ones that have hair disgust or terrify me (except for bees and bumblebees, love these fellas)
Also, what‘s her name? (I did a presentation on stag beetles in 6th grade and I think it‘s a female, but I’m not sure)
25
u/Tanto_yts Apr 08 '25
He is a male Serrgonathus titanus ssp palawanicus! Females have much smaller mandibles and don't have the triangular pattern on the head. I call him Stanley cuz it's a silly super un-expected name for an animal like him
20
u/Marcelaus_Berlin Apr 08 '25
Did all of his coworkers vanish all of a sudden while he was at his office job?

4
u/Material_Ad5997 Apr 08 '25
Dunno i think its pretty but its too risky to it being holded by an unsafezoned, hand i mean you could break one of its antennas
10
u/Tanto_yts Apr 08 '25
nah nah they are extremely durable and in the wild they have super hardcore fights and leave unscathed. their antennaes flex really well at the joints and do not break easily. I'n my 12 years of keeping beetles i've never had a broken antennae. they also voluntarily drop off trees in the wild too.

u/Ok-Chemical-7635 19 Apr 09 '25

I have 2 snakes, 4 lizards (3 geckos and 1 monitor lizard), some jumping spiders, a bunch of blue death feigning beetles and ironclad beetles, some Madagascar hissing roaches, and occasionally a centipede or scorpion (they kinda come and go - giant centipedes do pretty well for me but I've stopped getting them for now because I LOST my first one and my 3rd one into the same crack in the floorboards - keep in mind they're venomous so I wasn't too thrilled about that - I usually have scorpions but my desert hairy scorpion named cupcake recently passed as well as my Asian forest scorpion Jamal so I'm not quite ready to get ore yet)

Once had three fire salamanders until they either died or went missing. I put the most effort into taking care of those guys more than other pets by giving them an enclosure that's close enough to their environment and feeding them flies, but whatever I still suck at pets.
