In 8th grade my dad called me out of a midterm to go eat ribs with him at a sports bar.
Needless to say, my dad is the best.

Edit for more info: I have to take care of my attendance or the top universities won't like it, like REALLY won't like it because they think that the student has been careless and doesn't give a fuck about attending classes

We regularly let our girls take beach days or mental health days, they had straight As so they obviously did not need to be there every day. They both graduated HS as class valedictorian. They were also not allowed to work a job as school was their job and getting As was the task so they could get a scholarship fit college otherwise they might not be able to go as we could not afford it. They both got full ride scholarships !
124
u/Acceptable-Staff-363 18 Apr 13 '25
Well did you have college funds saved for them? It would seem as compensation for $ they could've earned up from having a real job.

u/Careless_Ad2194 13 Apr 13 '25
Dang ima do that too if I have kids that get straight As
3
u/Bocchi_theGlock Apr 14 '25
Just provide structure to kids so they apply for all scholarships, they don't even have to be straight As
you can get more than enough in scholarships to cover everything if you treat applying like it's a job

I don't know why this showed up on my feed but: I'm a dad.
My parents made me go to school regardless of anything. Sick as heck, fighting off bullies, teacher problems: go to school.
I do not do this with my kid.
Sometimes, people just need a day. Especially teens. I feel for you kids that don't get the support you need to even just have a break.
My son is about to be a teenager, and he will get a break when he needs a break. No questions asked. He's 12 and the standard tests coming up have him freaked out. Last Wednesday we skipped out and went on a hike.
As a parent, I could care less about the curriculum. I care about my kid, and I bet a lot of your parents do too. But, you have to talk to them and let them know.
Thankfully, my son talks to me, and is vocal about issues so I can help him navigate though.
Guys, try to talk to your parents about these things. We were all kids/teens/young/fun once. They know, just remind them about it.
Everyone needs a break.

Im sure your kid is raised really well. I wasnt his age a long time ago, and i can just say exams have also been killing me when i was 12, but my parents always thought i was just making things up and that i wanted to play video games all day. I did not. I just wanted a break. I once had a temperature of 38.5 Celsius degrees, but i had a really important exam that day. And the teacher didnt come to school and we didnt write the exam. My mom basically forced me to 6 hours of crap for nothing, while being sick as hell. You are a very good father and i wish more dads are like you.

Lucky duck, I'm only allowed to stay home if I am sick, badly injured, or I can take a mental health day, but I haven't taken a mental health day yet, because if I take one I'll never stop..... school sucks 😭

I’m a grandmother and don’t know how I landed here, but about 2-3 times a year I call my daughter and ask if I can take the kids out of school for a “mental health boost.” She’s all for it because I did the same for her when she was young, especially junior year, which is stressful.
I take them out to eat, and we go to a movie or a museum. Sometimes we by art supplies and paint, or we play board games. We cook together,or go to a cat café. Most importantly we share thoughts and feelings.
I think you teenagers are amazing, I love you, and thanks for letting me tell you that.

My parents have pulled me out of school multiple times to go to the movies. Sometimes because they felt like it and sometimes because they thought we deserved it for working so hard. They always used excuses like, "Oh, her grandfather is so sick." Said grandfather was already dead, btw. My parents were very morbid 💀

once i came home from school very tired. that day there was an event at our school that was mandatory to attend. i came home and was very frustrated and i was upset to my dad about how much i didn't want to go back. to which he said: then don't go. and i said that mom didn't allow it and that she would be angry. he just said: is mom home? (my mom wasn't home at the time)

I used to call my daughter out of school occasionally if I thought she needed to sleep more due to a growing spurt. Always made sure she wouldn't be missing anything important, would turn off her alarm clock, leave a note and just let her sleep. (When she was old enough to stay home alone.)
Never gave her a heads up. Sometimes she would just be getting up when I got home from work. Happened <3/yr, but made a huge difference in her overall mental health and performance.

I would just stay home and flex on my friends that I got to play tf2 or smth until one time I found out they were having kebabs at lunch. (I don’t normally eat at school but still)
