medvedev is slowly losing his mind

977

Slowly but also he’s fast forwarding tonight

He's losing his mind from both ends

28

u/elmisteriosoviaje 2d ago

Hes like a decadent rockstar, at this point Im waiting for the OD

497

u/GregorSamsaa 2d ago

He’s always been like this. He just had a few years of success which resulted in less of these antics.

144

u/NikiOnTime 2d ago

My first memory of medvedev, way before he become an ex top 10 player was him throwing coins at the umpire after he lost a match. I was thinking there is no way this guy would not be allowed to play at tennis tournaments.

Slowly? This is who he is and has always been

74

u/Nopementator 2d ago

He was "insane" since day one. He's just getting worse at hide it.

He's a different guy on the court, like Rublev, and he has anger issues he struggle to contain while playing.

4

u/mmconno 1d ago

Something tells me he’s a POS in every aspect of his life—not just on the court.

r/tennis in a nutshell

72

u/TOMA_TAN Olympic Village Savant, Tienacious 2d ago

Next time med does something funny, the apologist are going to flood out with their “They’ll never make me hate you, meddy bear”

I just hopes med becomes irrelevant soon enough so we dont have to deal with his nonsense every other tournament

But he plays video games! I have to support everything he does now!

67

u/rogersmj 2d ago

No kidding, I’m so tired of half of /r/tennis defending this guy because he occasionally says something funny in an interview. He’s a dick, he’s always been a dick, he’ll always be a dick. This defeat couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person. Hopefully he retires.

I've never seen this move before lol

77

I remember him doing the same thing to Tien in their AO match. He mocked Tien when Tien was doing that little racket shake to his team to celebrate winning a game.

u/Jolly_Syrup_4805 2d ago

Different move same story. He's an asshole on court and has basically deserved the boos at every event he's been at

28

u/choosenameposthack 2d ago

He’s getting cheered on by the American fans.

31

u/silly_rabbit289 we can predict the future or not? 2d ago

It's such a bizarre reversal after all the years of negative vibes with the crowd, and to think they're behind him when he's probably on one of his worst behaviors lol

19

u/Jolly_Syrup_4805 2d ago

Who want to see more tennis and are kinda drunk...

They hate him too lol.

r/tennis is an exception of a population. Most dislike meddy lol. He's not even close to as popular of a player as he should be for someone with his results.

Kind of surprised he didn't get a visible obscenity for this, especially because Allensworth is the umpire tonight

106

He might get a fine for this, Kyrgios got a fine for making a hand jerk motion with his water bottle years ago during a match on camera.

Did the ump see it? If there were still linespeople they might have caught and reported it. I'm hoping officials can fine him after the fact for this.

88

u/MrAlpacaSpit 2d ago

Ump can barely turn his head so probably didn't see it

I agree linespeople would/could have caught it. One can only wish

He's actually such an ass. I'm just thankful that it seemingly isn't as much of a problem off the court.

85

u/PM_YOUR_SMALLBOOBIES 2d ago

Honestly, I think he's just a goofball, but also a sore loser. Probably a lot also to do with some crude and twisted sense of Russian humor.

I thought that exaggerated look into the crowd 🫡 in Toronto was hilarious.

I genuinely think that he has such a high self-opinion and expectation that he does these things to sort of make a mockery of his failures. Like it's a comedy that he's losing because he's obviously expected to win... but the thing is, the reality is that he's no longer good enough for this bad tennis to be ironically bad. It's just a messy, unironic decline.

12

u/Individual-Movie-294 2d ago

This is a really great take!! I agree with you. I just wish he would be more self deprecating and make fun of self. Mocking others and then destroying property is just bullying and ahole behavior.

25

I’ve been saying that for the last few years on this sub

It’s so weird how much hate they have for certain shitty behavior like Nick’s (which is warranted) but are completely enamored by Med despite doing absolutely shitty things like this. All because he plays video games and does a few quirky things now and then.

Imagine if Nick did this. Imagine if Novak did this. Imagine if anyone else did this, this sub would call for their suspension from the ATP

This is just absolutely terrible behavior from Med that should really be punished. It also makes it worse that this only comes out when he loses. Otherwise he’s fine. He’s just a sore loser.

67

u/xsyruhp 2d ago

41

u/studiousmaximus ABSLOLUTE BUBLIKMA! 🙌🏼 2d ago

he’s genuinely funny, was one of the few people to actually challenge and even beat djokovic at slams, and gives incredibly thoughtful, detailed press conferences. off the court he is a delight and shrewdly insightful.

he’s also a somewhat toxic character on the court, which can turn people off like you. but there’s plenty to like if you really want to get down to it

12

u/schoeneblume 2d ago

Got it. Doesn’t really work for me. I find the court behavior destroys everything else. I also don’t really understand why Lacoste thinks it’s good for their brand to associate with him.

18

Not sure if you were serious, but meddy was mocking the bonzi’s fist pumping. And then turned the motion into a BJ

7

u/PresentationDry6103 2d ago

Possibly the lewd gesture will be his undoing when the ATP reviews the footage. Bringing the game into disrepute? The writing is on the wall for Medve-devil.

9

u/EggsBenedictusXVI 2d ago

I'm really intrigued by this. I'm a long-time tennis fan but quite new to the sub/online tennis discourse in general - there are people out there who like Medvedev?! That's wild to me.

21

u/Vanliv 2d ago

Bublik can challenge him in this ugly competition 😒

23

u/strike2867 2d ago

I'd argue Bublik's antics are conscious efforts to unsettle his opponent, he's said so himself. Medvedev on the other hand is just an asshole. Everybody forgets he said something so bad, presumably racist, he was defaulted instantly.

16

u/telcoman 2d ago

The biggest asshole player and the biggest umpire asshole walked into a bar tennis court...

19

u/PresentationDry6103 2d ago

The reference to what Reilly Opelka said was that Allensworth is the worst umpire on the tour. After this and the Draper/FAA incident I tend to agree. Laylani and Murphy are the best.

630

u/Available-Gap8489 Delbonis ball toss + Cressy second serve. Love chaos 2d ago

Smashing rackets and letting out frustration that way doesn’t bother me….

But mocking your opponents and being disparaging about them after a loss is just not cool.

73

u/MrAdamWarlock123 2d ago

What's there to mock? The most basic "come on" expression? This just makes Daniil look like a moron.

But yes I agree

→ More replies (2)

58

u/persephone_j 2d ago

Completely agree. I like Med but that is really disrespectful... I would almost prefer that they get rid of the violations for racket breaking (granted that it does not hit anyone) as it seems like a better way to let out frustration rather than taking it out on the umpires or other players.

75

u/LintQueen11 2d ago

Same! He was quirky and charming in a goofy way but this is just crass.

34

u/Specific-Angle-152 2d ago

This is it, him slowly walking of the court at Indian Wells or taking out the single court pole vs Zverev are goofy things. Throwing tantrums and ripping into opponents isn't.

I sort of get it, he must be frustrated af. He was no 1 in the world, won a slam by crushing Djokovic in the finals, should have won AO 2022 too, got a hernia that year, some other issues after that, and he never was the same player. First the serve went, this year he's aging and getting slower too, so his most important assets are dissappearing even more.

He really is one of the closest players to kyrgios level buffoonery every other tourney yet he's so memeable, that this weird ass parasocial sub loves him

Is anyone surprised at this point? No other player on tour would’ve gotten away with such blatant disrespect and mockery of their opponent — not that any single player at least in the top 100 would ever do this — but not Medvedev. Even when he mocked Rune a while again it was unacceptable, but this sub was cooing over it bc “he’s so fun and quirky and such a good dude”… he isn’t. This is literally what he does every time things aren’t going his way. And these days, they just rarely do

medvedev is down 2 sets. might be looking at another early round exit in a slam this year.

13

u/mousemarie94 2d ago

Yeah, this is why when people try to say anything about the non issues of other players I ignore them completely and know it is for ...other reasons because Medvedev is actually of the players with the WORST sportsmanship on tour and doesnt get enough criticism for it. It should be endless because he sucks.

Just a little bit homophobic, no? In Australia a male footballer just got suspended for 4 weeks for a homophobic slur. This is on par with that.

22

u/Geraltsyenn 2d ago

Not just a little. I never liked Meddy's antics but as a queer tennis fan, this is a whole new level.

And people say it wouldn't be a big thing for a top 100 player to come out...

5

u/funkadelicmaestro ederer, Nishikori, Ferrer, Lee Duck-hee 2d ago

Thank you for saying it. Scrolled til I saw someone else thinking what I was thinking. 100%

21

u/JadedMuse 2d ago

Yep, that was my reaction too. As a long-time tennis fan who's also gay, this is not a good look. I hope the ATP sends a clear message and does something about it.

15

u/CanikUser19 2d ago

I realize meanings change over time. When I was younger the gesture in this clip wasn’t considered homophobic, just wildly inappropriate towards everyone. So is it indeed homophobic or sexually inappropriate in general? For clarity, I only have this clip to go by, not watching the match.

15

u/prescriptivista 2d ago

It's both. It's of course inappropriate and sexual by nature. As to the homophobic bit, this gesture is meant to mock Bonzi, who is a man, by implying he has oral sex with other men. So he is essentially mocking Bonzi by calling him gay, which is just plainly homophobic.

bonzi still living rent free on his head after wimbledon, i'm surprised he still went for a handshake after the match.

u/coffeesleeve 2d ago

He should take a break from tennis.

u/mralanorth Alcaraz, Dimitrov, 2d ago

Unacceptable behavior.

u/Ithaken_1177 2d ago

Spoiled brat and sore loser. Expect more of this from him as his ranking plummets into the toilet.

u/blackcoffee17 1d ago

I'm glad this clown lost! Go Bozni!

u/Westboundandhow 1d ago

What a child. He should be given a huge violation for this. He shouldn’t have even been allowed to finish this match. The umpire should’ve coded him for inciting a 6 minute delay. That umpire should be disciplined as well. He is horrible.

u/Confident_Taste2905 1d ago

I didn’t think he could get any worse.

tennis needs to start banning these idiots .. for reals.. Please clean up your sport ..

u/ComradeSubtopia 1d ago

Well, the better player won in the end. I think Meddy may actually drop out of the top 20 as a result of this loss. Couldn't happen to a more deserving idiot.

Used to like him, but this is unacceptable.

u/Arctic_wolfx 2d ago

The irony of him asking the umpire if he’s a man

Djoker and meddy both gonna retire this year

3

u/BeefonWeck00 1d ago

one of the first times i ever watched medvedev was in the US Open several years ago and the fans were booing him the whole match and he was such an asshole about it. deserved all the boos. i never liked him since and this all these years later validates how much a douchebag this guy is. what a lunatic.

3

u/jlesnick 1d ago

This is getting extreme. He is not handling this decline like an adult. I wish I knew what the problem. He needs time off the court to regroup and re-work his game a bit

3

u/NessieReddit 1d ago

Welp, I've always been team Meddy but after his embarrassing outburst during this match I just can't defend him. Grow up Meddy. Lost your serve? Go hire Ivanisevic to coach you and stop being a childish asshat if you're upset by your game play dropping off a cliff.

I was a Meddy fan but he has had a rotten attitude all season and this is the last straw for me. What a jerk.

3

u/nooneeeeeeee 1d ago

Rublev and Medvedev being best friends makes sense

8

u/SecretRonnieC 2d ago

Meddy is so washed

5

u/Double_Match_1910 2d ago

Outjerked, on the tennis court😔

5

u/BruceEgoz 2d ago

That is a grand slam projection of a nation, unfortunately

u/Impressive_Tomato665 2d ago

Wow this guy is so unhinged, it's great entertainment for bystanders & tennis fans - but I am kinda concerned about his mental state....

when he eventually retires he'll be remembered for these crazy antics, rather than how good & underrated an actual tennis player he is.

Itll be another 'what could've been' if he was more controlled upstairs, sadly kinda like Kygrios - have so much talent but underachive due to being mentally unhinged & struggling in high crucial pressure moments

u/IntoThePeople . 2d ago

I don’t think you can call Medvedev an underachiever when he has a Grand Slam, multiple other Slam finals, was world no. 1, a world tour final and multiple masters titles. He bloomed relatively late and made the most of his physical peak. He’s achieved far more than anyone thought he would. When he was playing well, his mental outbursts helped him let off steam. Now he’s well past his best so there’s more of a focus on his outbursts. You can get a way with a lot when you’re winning.
