Soprano Actors in other movies

Anyone ever noticed that if you spot one Soprano actor in a film, there's typically at least one more? The only actor who often stands alone is Joey Pants and Gandolfini obviously.

I just watched Money Train which has Janice and Big Puss in it. Absolutely bizarre.

Goodfellas might as well have been a widespread casting call.

47

u/Life_Is_All_Nothing 1d ago edited 1d ago

It was only Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, whoever was Karen's mother, and the Shah of Iran who had major roles. Tony Sirico was noticeable but only appeared in a few scenes and was not the focus of any of them; his character was inconsequential.

Pussy, Carmine Sr, and the other two dozen were just extras in the background appearing for a split second.

Fun fact though: Ray Liotta, who played the protagonist, was asked to play Ralph. He declined.

u/TopicPretend4161 1d ago

Maury from Goodfellas was also the Hasidic father-in-law/motel owner from the early seasons.

OMG HE TOTALLY WAS!

2

OMG! Love the reaction 😜

14

u/chicken_pear 1d ago

Damn I would have never caught that.

54

u/somanystuff 1d ago

You can't say "only" then list like 7 actors in common, that's not little. Plus Lorenzo "Larry boy" Baresi was the owner of the bar that gets torched so eight.

2

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

Yeah he got treated like half a fag.Ā

21

u/Smooth-Captain9567 1d ago

That’s a pretty long list… not sure it refutes the point haha.

-15

u/Life_Is_All_Nothing 1d ago

Point I make is that the 20-30 Sopranos actors who were in Goodfellas is not as meaningful as people think. The overwhelming majority were just in the background and appeared for a second, possibly not even saying anything.

The top three - Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci, weren't even in the Sopranos.

9

u/Smooth-Captain9567 1d ago

I think people reckon the sheer number is meaningful in itself, I do anyway.

1

u/thescumdiary 17h ago

Alright, but you gotta get over it

14

u/The_Ague 1d ago

Beansie’s character had a couple of lines.

8

u/ClarenceWalnuts99 1d ago

The guy from Pittsburgh! Want to see helicopters! 🤣🤣

2

u/HammermanAC 20h ago

Good eye, his name is Paul Herman.

1

u/candiedkangaroo 15h ago

Side note, was also in Casino. Taking numbers as a bookie in a phone booth.

14

u/BrotherGlobal641 1d ago

I can't watch the first 10 minutes of Goodfellas and not notice Tony Sirico. He is in basically every scene the wiseguys are in the start of the movie.Ā  Ā He is the one who puts the mailman in the back of the car.

13

u/HammermanAC 1d ago

The head of the North Jersey FBI office was in Goodfellas. His name was Frank Pellegrino.

8

u/StTickleMeElmosFire 1d ago

And I think Henry hills probation officer was the military academy commandant (the corps, the corps, the corps)

1

u/tumalditamadre 19h ago

Also part owner of Rao's

1

u/HammermanAC 19h ago

Did not know that, thanks!

1

u/No_Nukes_2 15h ago

He's dead

1

u/No_Nukes_2 15h ago

He don't own anything

9

u/Green-Draw8688 1d ago

I’m glad Liotta didn’t get Ralph. Pants brings a kind of playful menace to Ralph which actually makes him more horrifying, I don’t think Liotta could have pulled that off - would have been too straight and po-faced.

3

u/Glass-Technology5399 1d ago

Joey was amazing as Ralph. I don't think Ray could have played it the same.

2

u/Cdawg4123 1d ago

Who was is casino?

2

u/HammermanAC 19h ago

Here is link to an article, there are 29 actors who appeared in both Goodfellas and Sopranos. https://screenrant.com/sopranos-goodfellas-actors-mafia-movie-roles-explained/

2

u/acslaterjeans 16h ago

WHOEVER WAS KAREN'S MOTHER?

Her name was Suzanne Shepherd and in this house, she's a stage and screen legend.

2

u/Life_Is_All_Nothing 15h ago

She was also Carmella's mother, and was almost Tony's mother, Livia. She auditioned.

Shame she couldn't play the character as well as Nancy Marchand; unlike the latter she wasn't another toothpick who would kick the bucket after just two seasons.

4

u/acslaterjeans 12h ago

She was also given a quarter by Uncle Buck to go downtown and have a rat gnaw that thing off her face

1

u/El_highwayman 8h ago

Moley Russell's wart.

1

u/Few-Medium8409 16h ago

the Jacket!!!!

1

u/Sunnyday1775 1d ago

Ray would have been perfect for Ralph

3

u/BugRib76 18h ago edited 17h ago

Innocent Blood comes close. Paulie Walnuts, Richie, Feech La Manna, and probably some others I’m forgetting at the moment.

2

u/BugRib76 17h ago

Oh yeah, and that Carmine Lupertazzi guy, with the fish lips (fittingly played by Tony Lip).

1

u/Few-Medium8409 16h ago

A don doesn't wear shorts

2

u/DomOfaKind 10h ago

Larry was also the restaurant owner who’s store got busted out in Goodfellas

2

u/Suspicious-Whippet 1d ago

I haven’t seen that one in oh probably 20 years

24

u/clamdever 1d ago

Twenty years you wanted to watch Goodfellas but you compromised. You jacked off on a grilled cheese instead.

7

u/LitigiousAutist 1d ago

A master cheese maker.

5

u/Surviverino 1d ago

Just like Paulie

3

u/chicken_pear 1d ago

You think clamdever is a little weird about grilled cheese sandwiches?

1

u/Few-Medium8409 16h ago

I watched Cleaver again last night

9

u/Existing-Square1389 1d ago

A little refresher here. Once you’re out, you’ll be headed straight to Neir’s Tavern. There’ll be a short guy (who is just a kid) that comes in with his goomah. You’ll go a bit too far with breaking his balls about being a shoeshiner when he was more of a kid. LSS, you’ll be killed, uncinematically, and won’t need to spend another fuckin day compensating in the can.

47

u/kp123 1d ago

Christopher has a great role in season 2 of White Lotus.

23

u/somanystuff 1d ago

And Dwight Schrute's sensei

2

u/I_Am-Awesome 1d ago

He also played Uriel for a few episodes of Lucifer.

2

u/Beneficial-Flow-9852 5h ago

He's also the detective in The Lovely Bones

45

u/KennyShowers 1d ago

Cop Land is a big one

7

u/Sour-Scribe 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yep I haven’t made an official count but I’m pretty sure it has the most cast members of any movie…. contrast that with PRIZZI’S HONOR some years before that and you got Robert Loggia holding down the fort more or less by himself.

1

u/ProfessorTremendous 16h ago

YES!!!! ABSOMOTHAFUCKINLUTELY!!!!!!!! ALMOST EVERYONE IS IN THAT!!!

Edie Falco John Ventimigia Frank Vincent Annabella Sciorra Arthur J Nascarella Robert Patrick Tony Sirico Vinny Vella

1

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

Just watched it last week for the first time in probably decades and didn’t realize how many Sopranos actors were in it, many of them in but parts. Ā

Makes sense, given it was a NYC based production with a low budget. Ā If your 1990s movie was about greaseballs/goombas/mobsters/bad cops/Italian-Americans and you wanted to at least have a semblance of legitimacy in your casting, there was probably a limited pool to draw the acting talent from. Ā

1

u/El_highwayman 8h ago

Actually, and I'm not being cunty here, it was New Jersey based, like the Sopranos.

25

u/WatercressExciting20 1d ago

Janice was a witness in Sleepers. Fucking rat.

Obviously Makezian in Home Alone.

Lady Gaga.

Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood and The Batman.

7

u/BLGChef 1d ago

Looks like T-1000 was on his own but it still happens a lot

3

u/Pure-Lime8280 1d ago

Janice was in Bringing Out The Dead as a cynical and sarcastic emergency room doctor.

3

u/somanystuff 1d ago

Janice was in "Junior" with Arnie

1

u/AfraidOfAtttention 21h ago

Janice played the sister of a mobster in Brooklyn 99 lmao

27

u/Ok_Cat_9656 1d ago

C'mon Dominic Chianese was Johnny Ola in Godfather 2.

6

u/BumblebeeForward9818 1d ago

OP is a jamook.

15

u/gorillas_choice 1d ago

Just watched Shark Take with my boys. Michael Imperioli and Vincent Pastore

4

u/mashubirdsall 1d ago

I remembered getting counseled at my job, for talking about Big Pussy in front of others. I even explained it.

2

u/cannedrex2406 1d ago

Was it before or after you called him a fish

2

u/El_highwayman 8h ago

Because you did-ent finish your explanation with, "Anyway, 4 dollars a pound."

1

u/mashubirdsall 7h ago

🤣 Excellent response, but less people would actually understand that.

14

u/Lanky-Clothes-9741 1d ago

Mean Streets (1973) has Richie Aprile and Dr Melfi’s husband/ex-husband

12

u/ladivarogue 1d ago

Boardwalk Empire has a few Sopranos alumni

11

u/Outrageous_Slide_308 1d ago

Fallen had Janice and Gandolfini I can’t remember if there were any more in that one

5

u/NoEditor9480 1d ago

Angie, also with Jackie Sr

1

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

Elias Koteas, aka The Guy Who Stole All Those Pork Loins From Stew Leonard’s (but that’s not why we’re here now, so moving on) was the killer that gets executed in the opening scene.Ā

8

u/doverawlings 1d ago

Finally got around to The Basketball Diaries the other day. Saw Puss and Melfi chop it up with young Leo DiCaprio, that was kinda cool

3

u/fleshpress 1d ago

I have honestly never seen it, but doesn't Michael Imperioli play some kid with cancer as well?

4

u/doverawlings 1d ago

Oh yeah I forgot about him, he’s a cancer kid who gets freaked out by a peep show and then dies

2

u/fleshpress 1d ago

That sounds wild maybe I will watch it. Only reason I have put it off is struggling with heroin myself in the past. Sometimes I don't even like watching Chrissie's scenes like him nodding at the carnival with the dog while The Dolphins plays.

1

u/Upper-Ship4925 1d ago

That’s the most authentic relapse high scene I’ve ever seen.

1

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

Carlito’s Way was another one. Another NYC based production, like a lot of the other films mentioned on this thread, features Vincent Pastore as basically an extra (alongside his cousin Gerry Pastore), along with Paul Mazursky (Sunshine), Joseph Siravo (Johnny Boy Soprano), Brian Tarantina (Mustang Sally), and Saundra Santiago (Jeannie Cusamano). Ā  If they had 10 lines of dialogue amongst them I’d be surprised.Ā

I’m sure there were other actors in the film that turned up in bit parts in The Sopranos that I’m missing.Ā

9

u/BLGChef 1d ago

Charmaine and Matthew Drinkwater in A Bronx Tale

5

u/Martin_Jay 1d ago

Also the kid who played Tony as a little boy when he hid in the back of his dad’s car was the little boy in Bronx tale

1

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

Very similar looking kid but Bronx Tale was 1993. Actor would’ve been 18 by the time Sopranos first aired.Ā

1

u/Martin_Jay 10h ago

You’re right! My mistake!

2

u/BangerSlapper1 10h ago

Believe me, I thought the exact same thing when I saw that episode. Kid was a dead ringer.Ā

7

u/Apprehensive-Job3734 1d ago

The Gotti movie from the 90s had Puss and Junior in it. Not sure about the Travolta one

3

u/The_Ague 1d ago

And Paulie

1

u/PotentialSpare6412 1d ago

Paulie and Uncle Philly too.

6

u/Pure-Lime8280 1d ago

Charmaine Bucco in The Irishman.

She's Russell Bufalino's wife. There's a scene where Russ comes home covered in blood and she kinda looks at him like "oh FFS Russell, not this shit again", sighs and then tells him to take his clothes and shoes off and get a shower and she'll take care of it.

9

u/CarpenterNo263 1d ago

Silvio singing in The Irishman, whatever happened there.

3

u/Sour-Scribe 1d ago

Hah I just realized she wound up as mob wife after all but is still giving her husband mucho shit

2

u/Pure-Lime8280 1d ago

Yah, Russell wouldn't stop the car so she could have a smoke, so she just sparked up in the car.

1

u/Miserable-Ask-470 12h ago

She's also in Alto Knights as Vito Genovese's (RobertDe Niro) wife.

7

u/startinearly 1d ago

Rare trivia. Mikey Palmice was in a Shannon Whirry skinemax movie. He even got to touch her boobies.

3

u/BumblebeeForward9818 1d ago

Fabulous actress. Got her late night movies on VHS somewhere.

1

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago

LOL. Ā I’m always intrigued by actors from the legitimate film world - even if not major actors - that turn up in soft core films. Ā I remember watching a Skinemax film called Secrets of a Chambermaid where an actor named Michael Ensign played a butler. Ā Ā

Ensign was a character actor who turned up in a bunch of big time movies, like Ghostbusters as the snooty hotel manager, WarGames (as a background military officer), Titanic (as Benjamin Guggenheim, the guy who gets dressed up to the nines and orders a drink as the ship sinks, because he wants to go out like a gentleman), and a crapload of appearances on well known TV shows, where he typically played a snooty doctor (I think I counted at least 10 credits on IMDB where he’s listed as ā€œProfessor/Doctor So-and-soā€). Ā

Not a major star by any means, but I always wondered why he’d slum it in a late night titty film where he probably got paid like $800. Ā Maybe he knew the director and did it as a favor.Ā

7

u/Careless_Guidance986 1d ago

Junior was a made guy in Godfather II. He thought he was out of gangster movies but David Chase pulled him back in.Ā

5

u/Pure-Lime8280 1d ago

Killing Them Softly had Tony, Johnny and Benny.

6

u/Katz3njamm3r 1d ago

Janice in What We Do In The Shadows!

4

u/TheGambler930 1d ago

Made (2001) had Big Puss, Furio, and Adriana.

1

u/Key-Bedroom-1046 19h ago

Pussy was in Corky Romano (also 2001) but idk who in the Reddit community has seen itĀ

5

u/MishmoshMishmosh 1d ago

I think Michael Imperioli was in The Lovely Bones

4

u/BurritoDoom 1d ago

Im pretty sure Janish played a judge for a few episodes of law and order the SUV

3

u/TomCommendatore 1d ago

Crimson Tide had Jimmy G and Drinkwater.

2

u/PJfanRI 1d ago

It also had that Beliaqua kid

3

u/TomCommendatore 1d ago

Bevilaqua IS Drinkwater, my man.

2

u/PJfanRI 1d ago

Oh shit, didn't realize

3

u/BLGChef 1d ago

Kiss of Death with Jonny Cakes and Fat Dom. Sure there was more in that.

3

u/doopies1986 1d ago

Bobby and Pussy are great in Aqua Teen Hunger Force

3

u/Agreeable_Sleep7872 1d ago

Nonnas on Netflix as Dr Melfi and Adriana - very different roles as well

3

u/NorthsideB 1d ago

A large amount of Sopranos actors were in the HBO movie Gotti from 1996. Even Johnny Sack has a non-speaking role in it.

3

u/Low-Individual2815 1d ago

Fucking goodfellas has like all of them 🤣

3

u/werdnurd 1d ago

Watch 90s era Law and Order episodes to play ā€œSpot the Sopranos actor.ā€ You’ll win a lot.

5

u/mayforsam1900 1d ago

Home Alone had Lieutenant Makazian in it.

The Office had Chris as Dwight's karate instructor.

2

u/MeanGeneSimmons1 1d ago

It also had Dr Melfi's son

2

u/Disastrous_Cream_539 1d ago

And a Jason Barone

1

u/MeanGeneSimmons1 1d ago

Jason Barone was great in Silicon Valley..

2

u/Sufficient-Cat8925 1d ago

The Public Eye. Hesh. Junior.

2

u/TopicPretend4161 1d ago

Eugene is in American Gangster.

Anyone else? I don’t see a second but I could be wrong.

1

u/BLGChef 1d ago

Apparently Gandolfini turned down the role of Officer Trupo (Josh Brolin) so maybe we can count that aha

1

u/PotentialSpare6412 1d ago

I think Anthony Maffei is in American Gangster too.

2

u/d0rkbug 1d ago

Crazy nobody mentions nicky deuce

2

u/Ahmed06dk 1d ago

I’m surprised no one has mentioned ā€œThe Jurorā€ - even tho the roles aren’t that big and they don’t have much screen time , Tony & Jackie Aprile Sr has done quite a nice job with their acting in The Juror

2

u/WartMan2 1d ago

Apart from Nikki Deuce, Mickey Blue Eyes has probably the largest similarity in casting to the Sopranos.Ā

The actors of Paulie, Artie Bucco, Big Pussy, Janice and many more appear in this movie.Ā

2

u/JuJu081316 1d ago

Feast of the Seven Fishes. Little Carmine and Ralphie. Checks out.

2

u/gobartlett 1d ago

Funny, I also notice that with actors from The Wire.

1

u/WritingUnicorn2019 1d ago

and Sons of Anarchy

2

u/piratedrake84 1d ago

Well. New season of dexter. Dexter ressurection only has Bobby in it. But its a series. But yea. "Hey, you sniff that girls panties?"

2

u/dryocopuspileatus 1d ago

Just spotted Artie in Party Girl yesterday!

2

u/Upper-Ship4925 1d ago

Mickey Blue Eyes has half the Sopranos cast in it.

2

u/SicilianSlothBear 1d ago

Three actors from the Sopranos voiced characters in Grand Theft Auto III: Frank Vincent, Joe Pantoliano, and Robert Loggia.

2

u/PotentialSpare6412 1d ago

Bobby Jr was in School of Rock. (Which was filmed and set in North Jersey).

Jimmy Petrille, Phil Leotardo in Casino.

1

u/BLGChef 1d ago

I should have made a list as none are coming to me now haha

1

u/Intelligent-Row-8780 1d ago

Completely random, I saw an episode of Stargate Atlantis that had both Phil and Bobby at a poker table. Almost surreal, I had never even heard of the show before

1

u/KingMabelicious 1d ago

Basketball diaries had Christopher and Dr. Melfi

1

u/cabell88 1d ago

When I started listening to 'Talking Sopranos', there were always mentions of movies that they were in, and they mentioned the other people in them.

I swear, I think I only listened to 2 seasons of that, and I have a list with probably 100 titles.....

1

u/audio-nut 9h ago

Ā Both of them in the Stu Ungar biopic. Not a great film.Ā

1

u/Katz3njamm3r 1d ago

Uncle June and Ritchie in Feast of the 7 Fishes

1

u/Careless_Guidance986 1d ago

I see Christopher here and there as a character actor. Always top of his game.Ā

Last time I saw him in Lucifer, the TV progrum - played Lucifer's brother Uriel.Ā

1

u/nafregit 1d ago

I love it when I see a film that I've seen before with something like the Sopranos in between and I notice the actors that I hadn't previously seen. Ironic that Cwistopher gets shot in the foot in Goodfellas and then shoots someone in the foot in the Sopranos.

1

u/eschu101 1d ago

I highly recommend Bound, Memento and White Lotus season 2.

1

u/yeezusosa 1d ago

Eddie / Father Phil (they have an affair)

I'm not finished my rewatch yet so there might be more

I've seen this A LOT with cast from the Sopranos, and especially The Wire.

Robert Loggia

I imagine it is more a case of if the movie is needing multiple people of Italian American descent and it is shooting on the east coast, specifically NY, there is quite a shallow pool of talent unless you start getting into paying De Niro, Pesci, Liotta money.

So if a casting call goes out for 'mob member' the casting director sends the 20 people they have, who also happen to have been the exact same list for a couple of decades.

If you are making a movie about the mob, are you going to want to turn down people like Paulie, or Puss etc when they will likely bring in some attention and fans and give it an air of legitimate 'mobsters'.

The other aspect of The Sopranos is almost the entire cast was Italian American, so out of the 3000 speaking members of the cast, every single actor with that background likely got a chance, anyone with talent got a spot, talented people go on to work more.

Its the same kind of thing with the number of stars who got their start on Miami Vice, which is a who's who of up and comers, hundreds of actors have that in their resume. It should be considered though, tens of thousands of actors appeared in that show, so there is a lot of confirmation bias at work.

1

u/nscheffey 1d ago

A great more obscure one is Coco and Tony Black showing up as the two providence mob guys in The Departed

1

u/peacaulk 1d ago

A Michelle Pfeiffer and Bobby DeNiro movie, The Family. Junior and Puss, and a few other familiar faces.

Innocent Blood.

A pretty much forgotten about early 90s John Landis horror comedy where vampirism takes over a glorified crew. It's fantastic and has basically every staple of 90s mob movies and this thing of ours.

Starring Loggia, Proval, Sirico, Lip.
Plus Anthony LaPaglia, Chazz Palminteri, Don Rickles, Kim Coates, Luis Guzman etc.

Look at that fuckin line up. And it has Anne Parillaud's boobs and Loggia beating a guy to death with a toaster oven. What's not to love?

1

u/aintdatsomethin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well it’s not a mafia movie but Coens’ ā€œThe Man Who Wasn’t Thereā€ included Gandolfini in it. To say the least Coens are brilliant producers so it’d worth a shot to see it.

*Edited from crime to mafia movie.

Christopher played the tyre shop worker/informant ā€œJojoā€ in the first bad boys. Also anybody remember the show Nurse Jackie? Edie Falco aka Carmella? Show ran 7 seasons!

1

u/Busy-Crankin-Off 22h ago

Artie Bucco plays a child abducting scumbag in S06E01 of Law and Order. It's great.

1

u/Menzicosce 20h ago

Copland had like half the cast of sopranos in it.

1

u/UsualCourage7154 20h ago

damn i just scrolled all the comments and i didnt see michael imperioli in malcolm x getting mentioned. Come on you can notice that BEAK everywhere

1

u/CoupleA3Things 19h ago

The Brooklyn Banker which Furio directed also starred: Furio, Richie, Carlo, Burt Gervasi, plus a couple of one-off episode actors I forget their names.

Nicky Deuce had Bobby, Tony, Christopher, Paulie, and Johnny Sack, but I think Bobby wrote it or created so maybe more of a favor type deal.

The worse one I watch was Sarah Q had Paulie, Big Puss, Furio, Bobby Bacalerri Sr, Burt Gervasi, plus a couple of people that starred in one off episodes. This was one of the dumbest movies Ive ever seen.

1

u/pwolf1771 19h ago

Hesh popping up in A Most Dangerous Year is a great role

1

u/Few-Medium8409 16h ago

Janice became shark food in Deep Blue Sea

1

u/Adgvyb3456 15h ago

Go watch Angie

1

u/tuxedocat-Rickey 15h ago

Almost everything in that genre has a bunch of them, going back to the early 70s. Dominic Chianese in GF2, Gotti, and Sopranos is my favourite of them

1

u/Sosa1986 13h ago

Tony Sirico was on Miami Vice

1

u/Icy-Contribution1525 13h ago

Witness to the Mob is a pretty good, underrated made for tv movie. Its got imperioli and a few others.

1

A lot of it has to do with where the movie is produced/filmed. Ā I watched Copland the other day and obviously that was filmed out of NY and NJ and features Arthur Nascarella (Carlo Gervasi), Frank Vincent, Robert Patrick, Annabella Sciorra, John Ventimiglia, Edie Falco, Frank Pellegrino (the FBI boss), Paul Herman (Beansie), Bruce Altman (Allan Sapesly) and even Tony Sirico, who I think only appears in a photograph as a mobster. Ā Ā

Of course, a couple of those actors, like Sciorra and Patrick had real careers going and weren’t cast just because they were local. Ā  Ā But half of the names above I didn’t even realize were in the film from previous watches prior to becoming a Sopranos fans, since they were mostly bit parts.

But I guess if you’re also making a movie taking place in the NYC area that features plenty of Italian-American/goomba/Noo Yawk types, there’s a somewhat limited pool of actors to choose from. Ā  So it’s probably not too surprising to see 1990s/early 2000s films with Sopranos actors showing up by the busload.Ā

There were only so many fat Italians who could show up for east coast productions in the late 90s/early 00s.

Hadn’t seen The Monster Squad since I was a kid, saw it a couple of years ago and there’s David Proval (Richie Aprile) as one of the pilots of the cargo plane at the beginning.
