Soprano Actors in other movies
Anyone ever noticed that if you spot one Soprano actor in a film, there's typically at least one more? The only actor who often stands alone is Joey Pants and Gandolfini obviously.
I just watched Money Train which has Janice and Big Puss in it. Absolutely bizarre.

Yep I havenāt made an official count but Iām pretty sure it has the most cast members of any movieā¦. contrast that with PRIZZIāS HONOR some years before that and you got Robert Loggia holding down the fort more or less by himself.

YES!!!! ABSOMOTHAFUCKINLUTELY!!!!!!!! ALMOST EVERYONE IS IN THAT!!!
Edie Falco John Ventimigia Frank Vincent Annabella Sciorra Arthur J Nascarella Robert Patrick Tony Sirico Vinny Vella

Just watched it last week for the first time in probably decades and didnāt realize how many Sopranos actors were in it, many of them in but parts. Ā
Makes sense, given it was a NYC based production with a low budget. Ā If your 1990s movie was about greaseballs/goombas/mobsters/bad cops/Italian-Americans and you wanted to at least have a semblance of legitimacy in your casting, there was probably a limited pool to draw the acting talent from. Ā

Actually, and I'm not being cunty here, it was New Jersey based, like the Sopranos.

Janice was a witness in Sleepers. Fucking rat.
Obviously Makezian in Home Alone.
Lady Gaga.
Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood and The Batman.

Elias Koteas, aka The Guy Who Stole All Those Pork Loins From Stew Leonardās (but thatās not why weāre here now, so moving on) was the killer that gets executed in the opening scene.Ā

u/doverawlings 1d ago
Finally got around to The Basketball Diaries the other day. Saw Puss and Melfi chop it up with young Leo DiCaprio, that was kinda cool
3
u/fleshpress 1d ago
I have honestly never seen it, but doesn't Michael Imperioli play some kid with cancer as well?
4
u/doverawlings 1d ago
Oh yeah I forgot about him, heās a cancer kid who gets freaked out by a peep show and then dies
2
u/fleshpress 1d ago
That sounds wild maybe I will watch it. Only reason I have put it off is struggling with heroin myself in the past. Sometimes I don't even like watching Chrissie's scenes like him nodding at the carnival with the dog while The Dolphins plays.

Carlitoās Way was another one. Another NYC based production, like a lot of the other films mentioned on this thread, features Vincent Pastore as basically an extra (alongside his cousin Gerry Pastore), along with Paul Mazursky (Sunshine), Joseph Siravo (Johnny Boy Soprano), Brian Tarantina (Mustang Sally), and Saundra Santiago (Jeannie Cusamano). Ā If they had 10 lines of dialogue amongst them Iād be surprised.Ā
Iām sure there were other actors in the film that turned up in bit parts in The Sopranos that Iām missing.Ā

Charmaine and Matthew Drinkwater in A Bronx Tale

Very similar looking kid but Bronx Tale was 1993. Actor wouldāve been 18 by the time Sopranos first aired.Ā

Charmaine Bucco in The Irishman.
She's Russell Bufalino's wife. There's a scene where Russ comes home covered in blood and she kinda looks at him like "oh FFS Russell, not this shit again", sighs and then tells him to take his clothes and shoes off and get a shower and she'll take care of it.

Rare trivia. Mikey Palmice was in a Shannon Whirry skinemax movie. He even got to touch her boobies.
3
1
u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago
LOL. Ā Iām always intrigued by actors from the legitimate film world - even if not major actors - that turn up in soft core films. Ā I remember watching a Skinemax film called Secrets of a Chambermaid where an actor named Michael Ensign played a butler. Ā Ā
Ensign was a character actor who turned up in a bunch of big time movies, like Ghostbusters as the snooty hotel manager, WarGames (as a background military officer), Titanic (as Benjamin Guggenheim, the guy who gets dressed up to the nines and orders a drink as the ship sinks, because he wants to go out like a gentleman), and a crapload of appearances on well known TV shows, where he typically played a snooty doctor (I think I counted at least 10 credits on IMDB where heās listed as āProfessor/Doctor So-and-soā). Ā
Not a major star by any means, but I always wondered why heād slum it in a late night titty film where he probably got paid like $800. Ā Maybe he knew the director and did it as a favor.Ā

u/Careless_Guidance986 1d ago
Junior was a made guy in Godfather II. He thought he was out of gangster movies but David Chase pulled him back in.Ā

I love it when I see a film that I've seen before with something like the Sopranos in between and I notice the actors that I hadn't previously seen. Ironic that Cwistopher gets shot in the foot in Goodfellas and then shoots someone in the foot in the Sopranos.

I imagine it is more a case of if the movie is needing multiple people of Italian American descent and it is shooting on the east coast, specifically NY, there is quite a shallow pool of talent unless you start getting into paying De Niro, Pesci, Liotta money.
So if a casting call goes out for 'mob member' the casting director sends the 20 people they have, who also happen to have been the exact same list for a couple of decades.
If you are making a movie about the mob, are you going to want to turn down people like Paulie, or Puss etc when they will likely bring in some attention and fans and give it an air of legitimate 'mobsters'.
The other aspect of The Sopranos is almost the entire cast was Italian American, so out of the 3000 speaking members of the cast, every single actor with that background likely got a chance, anyone with talent got a spot, talented people go on to work more.
Its the same kind of thing with the number of stars who got their start on Miami Vice, which is a who's who of up and comers, hundreds of actors have that in their resume. It should be considered though, tens of thousands of actors appeared in that show, so there is a lot of confirmation bias at work.

Innocent Blood.
A pretty much forgotten about early 90s John Landis horror comedy where vampirism takes over a glorified crew. It's fantastic and has basically every staple of 90s mob movies and this thing of ours.
Starring Loggia, Proval, Sirico, Lip.
Plus Anthony LaPaglia, Chazz Palminteri, Don Rickles, Kim Coates, Luis Guzman etc.
Look at that fuckin line up. And it has Anne Parillaud's boobs and Loggia beating a guy to death with a toaster oven. What's not to love?

The Brooklyn Banker which Furio directed also starred: Furio, Richie, Carlo, Burt Gervasi, plus a couple of one-off episode actors I forget their names.
Nicky Deuce had Bobby, Tony, Christopher, Paulie, and Johnny Sack, but I think Bobby wrote it or created so maybe more of a favor type deal.
The worse one I watch was Sarah Q had Paulie, Big Puss, Furio, Bobby Bacalerri Sr, Burt Gervasi, plus a couple of people that starred in one off episodes. This was one of the dumbest movies Ive ever seen.

Witness to the Mob is a pretty good, underrated made for tv movie. Its got imperioli and a few others.

u/BangerSlapper1 11h ago
A lot of it has to do with where the movie is produced/filmed. Ā I watched Copland the other day and obviously that was filmed out of NY and NJ and features Arthur Nascarella (Carlo Gervasi), Frank Vincent, Robert Patrick, Annabella Sciorra, John Ventimiglia, Edie Falco, Frank Pellegrino (the FBI boss), Paul Herman (Beansie), Bruce Altman (Allan Sapesly) and even Tony Sirico, who I think only appears in a photograph as a mobster. Ā Ā
Of course, a couple of those actors, like Sciorra and Patrick had real careers going and werenāt cast just because they were local. Ā Ā But half of the names above I didnāt even realize were in the film from previous watches prior to becoming a Sopranos fans, since they were mostly bit parts.
But I guess if youāre also making a movie taking place in the NYC area that features plenty of Italian-American/goomba/Noo Yawk types, thereās a somewhat limited pool of actors to choose from. Ā So itās probably not too surprising to see 1990s/early 2000s films with Sopranos actors showing up by the busload.Ā

Goodfellas might as well have been a widespread casting call.
