S TIFU by trainig my dog before bedtime

Today just wasn't my day, so my ability to think clearly and make logical decisions is not the best. Objectively, I know sleeptime for dogs is important and that I should not have disturbed it.

I could not sleep and by trying to get water, I accidentally woke my dog. He refused to get more sleep, so I just decided to check his commands.

It went well. We played a bit, he obeyed voiceless commands and all was well. I accidentally signed the "sit" command when I looked elsewhere and was caught offguard by him obeying.

This led to me gasping in excitement and leaning forward to praise and pet him, but he got excited and jumped up, knocking his skull straight into my teeth.

He is absolutely fine, but my gum is a bit swollen, as well as a headache caused by one of my teeth feeling as if it was thrusted back into my head. There's almost no blood, though.

TL;DR: I went in to praise my dog, but he jumped at the same time and knocked his head against my teeth. It hurts.

i had a staffordshire bull terrier.

a cuddle and a badly placed skull on his part cost me 2 teeth.

thems the risks of having a clumsy best buddy built like a brick outhouse who loves nothing more than cuddles...

I also lost part of a tooth to a well meaning dog headbutt.

I feel like Terriers have a more durable skull. Mine is a Jack Russell Terrier, who loves cuddles too. He will jump by the baby-gate whenever I come home until I lift and carry him. And if I do not lift him before coming in, he will follow me and jump until I do.

Oof! I am sorry. My senior pit bull had arthritis in her hips. She would stand up and get her front legs on the bed, then I would boost her up on the bed. One day her feet slid while I was behind her trying to boost her up. She flailed and smacked her head into my jaw. It shoved my jaw diagonally and I have had TMJ ever since.

I hope your teeth recover!

This sounds painful, and I hope it does not hurt on the regular. Thank you for sharing your story!

Thank you! It does and doesn’t hurt. I have gotten six crowns in the past two years because of years of clenching my teeth in my sleep. I recently wore out my mouth guard and they are now on the fourth try in three months of making me a new one that lasts more than two weeks. At least for this try, they’re switching to a different material.

It’s not unusual for my jaw to hurt when I wake up in the morning after having slept without wearing a mouth guard. With a mouth guard, it doesn’t hurt. I will say the TMJ has gotten a lot better over the years. For the first several, I would have occasional days when it hurt to talk or have to chew food. I don’t have days like that anymore, but obviously it’s caught up with my teeth.

The funny thing is, when Tessa smacked me with her head, she wasn’t fazed in the least. Her nickname was Tankpiggy because she was built like a tank, absolutely solid. She also snorted, grunted and occasionally squealed like a pig. She was a delightful dog and the last big dog I ever had. I have only had lap dogs ever since.

Give your dog some scritchies for me. I hope your teeth don’t hurt today! If they are sensitive to temperature in a way they usually aren’t, that should go away in a few days.
