Mod Post UK GOVERNMENT EMERGENCY ALERT TEST

Post image

Just a heads up reminder the UK Government is testing the Emergency Alert system today at 3pm. If you’re in a situation where you have a secret phone, for whatever reason, and you need it to stay secret, here’s how you can turn the emergency alarm off. 1. Go into your settings, and go into the notification area 2. Scroll all the way to the bottom, and there should be a section for emergency alerts 3. Flick those two little buttons so that they’re not green

Stay safe, and this community is always, always here for you <3

Last time the precautions did not work. I would encourage anyone with a secret phone to hide it away from your home or dispose of it.

What about turning it off completely, didn't that help either? Just curious because I'm in a different country (idk if that's relevant lol) and when I had my phone turned off it didn't send the alarm

One could also run the battery dry just in case

As far as I know, no. I saw plenty of reports of phones turned off going off. It wasn't consistent though. Worked for some, not for others.

Can also put it in airplane mode temporarily right?

I’d say it’s best to use both precautions to be extra safe, or like another commenter mentioned, being extra extra safe and (if you can) removing the phone from the house just in case the first two precautions fail

people are reporting that about half the time, phones that were entirely turned off and had no power in them were still making noise so i wouldn’t trust airplane mode. maybe if you kill the phone/drain as much of the battery as you can?

My phone, it belonged to my dad and I didn't really have a phone as I didn't get a new one for a while after my previous one (an iPhone) got old, is Samsung and I bet I won't be able to turn off the notification.

My phone keeps on giving me a notification saying I have a new voicemail, I do not, and I can't turn it off. All I can is get it FO for a maximum of two hours. Samsung phones are so annoying.

Good cameras (literal cameras), bad phones.

Not to get all IT support on you but I got curious about your notification problem (I have a Samsung phone too) - have you tried leaving yourself a new voicemail and listening to it to see if that makes the notification go away? I found a discussion on this exact problem here with a few other fixes as well.

I can phone myself?

u/littleblueflames 1d ago

Yep! Give it a try - if your phone rings when you call yourself, let it go to voicemail and try leaving yourself a voicemail. If that doesn't work, you might need to look up other ways to leave yourself a voicemail. Or, if you're able, you could ask a friend to call you and leave a voicemail.

It said "line busy".

Maybe I'll try get my brother to leave a voicemail when he isn't busy. Might take a while.

I kept getting those and clearing data made it disappear until the phone got turned off and on again. Whoever designed voicemail notifications needs to step on a lego

Why and how would someone have a secret phone (with a mobile plan)? - Geniune question

Victims of domestic abuse with a second phone to help them escape their situation, or have it ready for when they do escape. People who have their phone monitored by family for any reason may have a second phone kept secret that can’t be monitored by their family etc. There’s a lot of reasons someone may have a second phone, and a lot of times if this second phone is revealed it could be detrimental for them, unfortunately :(

I mean more like, how do payments not get noticed? It sounds like they’d have to be done with cash only but phone plans are far too expensive to pay with cash, like how do you pay 30€+ phone bills without looking weird for somehow not having 30 anymore every month

I’m not sure, but in the UK there are ways of getting around it, like maybe a family member helping them out of the situation paying for the phone

Prepaid phones?

Parents who might check your phone so that you don't get outed by your search history or social media profiles you're logged into on your phone. My parents luckily never searched my phone, but I did grow up with the old ones that could play snake, and text and call, so it wasn't like I could be searching info about lgbtq+ people or make friends online. They did search through my room multiple times while I was at school though. Some parents just don't have a sense of privacy and like to be overly controlling helicopter parents. Not entirely sure about how someone would get a secret phone since I've never needed one, but there are prepaid plans so that would eliminate the threat of getting a bill in the mail. Probably takes a decent amount of money though and you're more likely to be an adult still living with your parents than a literal child, I'm not sure if there are age limits for being allowed to buy your own phone and prepaid plan.
