Sweetback - does anyone have opinions on Sweetback?

They started as Sade’s backing band but branched out with some good stuff of their own. Their single with Bahamadia - “Au Natural” was really good. Any thoughts?

I don’t really consider them trip hop, more of chill/jazz. I considered them good background music for working, but never really something I’d actively listen to.

Yeah I don’t really consider them trip hop but definitely trip hop adjacent. When they add rapped vocals like Bahamadia or Chocolate Genius it verges more in that direction.

Certainly trip-hop adjacent. I’d also add: check out some of the Sade remixes from the singles surrounding Love Deluxe. There are a lot of names familiar in trip-hop while the genre was still being established. Sade put their cosign on the sound very early.

the first album is a classic and rides that trip hop/electronic vibe.

since they were never really gonna tour, i think they had a limited reach
