Sharing funny way to cope with my social anxiety

Post image

I struggle a lot with talking to new people and making friends and out of the blue Twin Peaks gave me the best way to deal with. Agent Cooper is the most charismatic and charming character I have ever seen, the fact that he is quirky just makes me see myself in him a lot. So any time that I feel like socializing I just pretend that I am Cooper, talk his way, act his way, and it works (I guess, I complimented a lady's tattoo on the bus today which is something I never do).

Lynch's appreciation for Hitchcock is well established. Maybe something here too? (The Birds)

I was already thinking, "This movie so far really feels Lynchian, and that woman looks a little like Donna, with the makeup and the colors of her clothes...", and then -- "Annie Hayworth".

old hollywood references?

I started watching twin peaks for the first time (all of s1, s2, and fire walk with me--just started s3), and I noticed that the original series takes a lot of inspiration for the 1950's and the golden age of hollywood. you can see it everywhere if you know what to look for. donna and james are inspired by 'rebel without a cause.' perhaps the 1950's influence come from the influence of noir films?

a big reference to me would be audrey horne, who is very much written like a classic femme fatale and dressed in a very 80's-does-40's way. her first name obviously conjures audrey hepburn, and the last name harkens back to lena horne. it may be a stretch, but norma also has the birth name of the most famous old hollywood starlet, norma jean/marilyn monroe. if this just a coincidence?

I just saw some news that the Cleveland Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art will be screening all 18 parts of the Return throughout November and December. They haven’t announced the dates yet, but did confirm it in a comment under a Facebook post by one of their founders.

I got this from the Welcome to Twin Peaks Facebook page. I love it! Such a juxtaposition. And it really relates to what's going on in our world today.

First time watcher, full time idiot

Upvotes

Recently I finally decided to check out Twin Peaks after hearing my friend rave on and on about the genius of David Lynch for years, but pretty shortly after starting the first episode I was already extremely confused. To start: the synopsis of the show is about a dead teenage girl from everything I'd read, but by the point I'd got about halfway through the episode there was still no talk of Laura Palmer to be heard? Not only that but I remember several questions that I just couldn't wrap my head around, such as "holy shit this is SO experimental for the 90's, I'm surprised it attracted so many viewers? Like what is with all the super extended silent scenes that barely offer any exposition, or the red curtain backwards talking sequences?" But I kept going!

Anyway if it wasn't obvious with that (because it certainly wasn't to me) I somehow watched all the way through the first three episodes without realizing that I had accidentally started with season 3... And only after finally catching my mistake did I realize how dumb that was, because I even looked up specific actors that I saw in the show 3 TIMES before somehow realizing the timelines didn't line up. Actually what level of stupid do you have to be to look at an older Matthew Lillard, fully acknowledging to yourself that it's an older Matthew Lillard, and still not put together that what you're watching wasn't filmed in the 90s? Along the same line I also knew I recognized the actress that played Tracy, so I looked up her name from the credits just to find out that she played the little girl from The Nanny and thought omg how cool! EXCEPT THE NANNY STARTED AIRING IN 1993 HOW WOULD SHE HAVE AGED 20 YEARS THAT QUICKLY

With my total lack of critical thinking skills aside, if anything I actually do think it's a testament to David Lynch's absolute mastery of directing now because by the beginning episode 4 I still had NO idea what the fuck was going on and yet I was really still digging it! That crazy apparition thing coming out of the glass box to eviscerate poor Grace from The Nanny into a million pieces had me all the way hooked just to figure out what it all meant once everything came together, since I really just figured the show was one of those super avant-garde cult classics that you had to be a huge film aficionado or something (of which I am not) to fully appreciate yknow?

Since all that I quickly went back to view the show in the correct order and I just finished season 1- this show is great. I already know Dale Cooper is going to be one of those characters that sticks with me forever :') he reminds me of Michael from the Good Place sometimes with his infinite enthusiasm for the simple joys in life like coffee and douglas fir trees.
