What things should a new fan of the club know?

Hello! I'm just now getting back into Serie A football after more than a decade, and I'm interested in supporting Udinese. My late grandfather is from Udine, and I've always like supporting mid-table teams that can show some competitiveness and player development. It also helps if there is some good management/ownership in place. For context, if you're familiar with the NBA, I support the Indiana Pacers, so I'm also not a stranger to heartache or frustration lol.

What should a new fan know? How does the fanbase feel about the new possible ownership, Guggenheim?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

As good of a reason as any to support the zebretti. One of the oldest clubs in Europe. For the last 20ish years the club has really sustained itself on having a keen eye for young talent, developing them and selling them to bigger clubs.

The stadium is smaller as well as the region so this is the main way to stay financially sound and competitive against the bigger revenue sides some of the ones you’d know (Bruno Fernandez, Alexis Sanchez, Juan cuadrado, and most recently destiny udogie among countless others)

Seeing how you’re a pacers fan (myself as well) our Reggie miller is Antonio (Toto) DiNatale. One of the best strikers of the modern serie an era. He could have left at any moment, he was courted by Juve more than once and always turned them down as he wanted to remain here and also not take his kids out of school. Hes also just a great human on top of it

The club has been owned by the Pozzo family for 40 years, the son bought watford in the 2010s and that has seen the club go from challenging for European spots to languishing mid table, but it seems like Americans are interested in buying the club but there’s a few sticking points that’s preventing it from getting over the line

This sub has become far more active in the recent year and a half. It has a good mix of local and international members

Hey, thank you for the thoughtful reply!

It's an interesting club, for sure. Lots of character and history. I'm looking forward to the matchup on Sunday, it'll be a tough one. And I'm very familiar with DiNatale lol. Love that he's stayed loyal to the club for so long, it's always nice having someone like that around (like Reggie).

Thanks again! All the best.

Hi from Udine!!!!…..As far as we know now the foreign purchase option is not an option !….what is worth to know is that we as supporters of Udinese , will take every victory as a gift ( well desired indeed)….we will be soon again in Europe , where a football team coming from the land with thousands of ā€œfurlansā€ living around the world belongs!!

Welcome!

I feel like everyone basically gave a good summary of the club. Don’t be expecting to celebrate too many wins supporting Udinese.

Regarding the Guggenheim group, it was my understanding that they would take a share, and leave the Pozzo family to continue with the club, by basically just increasing the transfer budget, but alas, idk what happened.

Realistically, as in many cases of small to medium clubs, these American investors are not the best thing for them.

Only the future will tell!

Ps: to touch back on Udinese not winning much, there is a very good chance that we win against inter but then lose to Pisa. Just to shoot ourselves in the foot against other teams battling for relegation. Or even more realistic, lose both!

Thanks for the welcome and the info!

It sounds like interesting times indeed. The NBA team I follow had an absolute roller coaster ride this past season, all for it to come crashing down, so I should be able to handle some rough weather if it comes Udine's way, but here's hoping for some wins! Thanks again.

Well, we won against inter. Watch us lose badly against Pisa! This team is indeed a roller coaster!!!

I chose to support Udinese on a similar basis, my father's side is from Friuli and I like supporting a team that hails from the region my family came from. Gives more of a reason to care I believe. The club has been in Serie A for 30 years now an impressive run and have had flashes of brilliance since the late 80's with no trophies to show but they've always had players that go on to do big things if not with the club. Also go Pistons.
