Coterminous grant thread

Currently filling out my grant for my coterminous tickets. I study abroad for up to three months at a time in Europe. I’m currently entering my final year. During the application you are asked if you have lived outside of the U.K. for more than six months. What would be advisable to write there? I am also a member of a HO approved gun club that takes long range shooting very seriously. I am an avid shooter and have a lot of experience abroad shooting a wide variety of firearms and calibres. and will be applying for a 300 Win mag - Long to ultra long distance target shooting with hunting in Europe. 223 straight pull - low to mid range shooting with practical elements 7.62x54r - mid to long range target shooting. (Mosin of course) 22lr or even 22 mag semi auto in any platform again for target shooting and practical mini rifle. (Yes I know large ammo price discrepancy between the two). 45-70 lever action for cowboy action target shooting and for hunting in Europe. 12g over under for clays and grouse/pheasant Also any suggestions for acceptable ammo quantities would be appreciated. Ammo price isn’t really an issue. I do shoot often.

Applying for a moderator to accompany all rifles. I will be reloading for all of these calibres bar the 22. Just looking for some general advice here, tips and pointers really.

Thank you.

you have excellent taste. that’s a very practical battery.

just tell them all the details, lying by omission won’t be appreciated

they may have questions about storage while you’re away. if your safe is in an occupied house i’m sure it’s ok. i’ve known club members use an extra locker to store while travelling.

Cheers I Appreciate the reply. Yes the safe is in a full family house we are quite rural anyways with two other family members also in the process of joining a club.

sounds like you could have a gunroom, which for obvious reasons the cops will prefer in a more isolated home

Im not entirely sure what that would entail I’ve already got a 7 gun safe put in but I guess it could be done. I’m by all means all for the suggestion.

i bought a ten gun safe and always found it to be a pain even before i had 9 guns. the only thing the FEO ever asked was about my ammunition storage. by the time you’ve got 50 rounds in one of those MTN boxes it’s taken up quite a bit of space in the internal ammo box. as you’re reloading - same thing goes for powder storage. there’s some guidance on storage, obviously never in a safe, a plywood box is sufficient,,intumescent seals would be best. just show the FEO that you’re aware of the potential hazards and are actively managing the risk.

First off - mention it anyway. It'll come up in your interview and you can talk about security arrangements which is beneficial for your piece of mind.

However there are some things that'll come up:

45-70 is not really a cowboy action caliber. It's mad expensive and hard to source, and most ranges will stipulate pistol calibre. Go for .44mag if you want big boom and .357mag if you want economic boom. I'm willing to be corrected here.

Pretty much nobody will let you shoot .22mag for PMR. it's .22LR or gtfo. My range lets you get on with pretty much anything and they also say .22lr only. You could ask for 2X .22RF for PMR and separate target. I did this because it makes sense. My PMR is not going to do the same task as my target rifle. I was lightly pushed on action but I want a semi auto because I find it more fun and that's that. They were happy in the end.

Can't see them refusing a .300WM if you have previous and a place to shoot, plus .223 is pretty ubiquitous. Same for Mosin as you could justify wanting an historical calibre for personal enjoyment.

However if they really push you on taking something off I'd take off .223. Up to 150yd you have .22mag and beyond that .300WM. Might be hard to argue a separate calibre for intermediate ranges unless you can show competition requires it.

This is based on my own bullshit and I might be totally wrong but that's my 2 pence.

Edit: you have said PMR and target. So that's probably ok. The .223 should be ok if you can show where you're going to shoot CSR or whatever you're going to shoot. I'd make solid enquiries before the interview because otherwise it just looks like you're fishing for as many calibres as possible.

FWIW I asked for (and got) Sec1 shotgun for PSG, 2x .22rf for the same reasons as you, a .223 for the same reasons, and a .357mag for same reasons.

Duly noted. I’m really a fan of the .45-70 in a lever action any advice on that?

Yeah, target for enjoyment purposes. If that's true - why not? I don't need to shoot anything as I buy my meat at the supermarket. But I love shooting and I think it's really fun. And I like the challenge and enjoyment of shooting different actions and calibres.

My advice - learn how to load your own ammo because it's like £2 a shot Vs £1.40 a shot.

Of course. I shall be reloading all the calibres mentioned bar the .22. I’ve actually narrowed the list down quite a lot as I originally was wanting so much more. I have the same passion for shooting it’s never enough to be honest.

as the OP intends to hunt with his 45-70 he needs to show good reason-i know nothing of cowboy action events but i’ve stalked a fair bit and traveled with a rifle. option one is to have it conditioned for big reds and boar in the uk. totally reasonable

option two is conditioned for target practice in the uk. as there’s a bit of a knack to hitting the running deer target that’s a reasonable request.
