Discussion Any off the beaten path ideas?
Hey all - heading up to the UP Sep 6-13, staying in the Hiawatha area. I've read up on the "must do" things but wondering if there are any locals in here with advice that the blogs and guidebooks don't have. Open to ideas anywhere from Marquette to the west and Whitefish Point to the east. Traveling with a dog, fwiw. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I just learned about the Fiborn Quarry and definitely want to check it out sometime. https://archives.nmu.edu/beaumier/ghosttowns/Fiborn.html

You may find some inspiration for odd rabbit holes to pursue by watching some Restless Viking videos, or Alexis Dahl.

Sorry. I guess I don't know what you mean by Hiawatha. I assumed you meant the National forest.

For a weeklong trip, you should be good to go with the old standards. Check out the sites, tip generously, and don't camp in the left lane. If you feel like getting off the beaten path, there are a million places to go. Download the OnX app and go poke around.

Sturgeon Falls in Sturgeon Wilderness. Moderate hike of 1mile each way and the Falls is neat. Be sure to explore the side trails to get all views of it. In Sidnaw.

Afraid that might be too far west - I know we'll need to be in the car a good bit but not sure a 3-hr drive is in the cards. Next time up we'll defiitely check out the western side of the UP.

Be aware that First hunt bear season opens Sept 10th. Bear hunters will be in the woods who have spent 1000’s of dollar baiting and prepping.
