Looking to see what people DON’T like about living in the UP and how they manage those dislikes.

I have wanted to live in the UP long term for awhile now but have never lived in the UP.

For context I was born and raised outside of Flint and lived in SE Michigan for 24yrs before moving to western SD and now rural northern Nevada so I am no stranger to the “remoteness” of rural places.

Will say I haven’t had to deal with bugs since moving away from home and I know that’s a big thing for people in the UP

What can you tell me about memory care facilities in Escanaba & surrounding areas?

We’ve got a cabin for a week in Skanee. Any hikes or places of interest you can suggest? And what’s the correct pronunciation?

We're pretty early in the planning phase but hoping to get the entire family to the UP. My siblings are saying we'd need 7-8 cabins to comfortably accommodate everyone.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anywhere that would suit our needs- thought I'd post here and ask for help.

Hey guys, making a trip from downstate with some buddies, going about 20 min west of St Ignace, and I’m gonna try to bring my Garand and my Dragunov to do some target shooting. There’s 10 of us and we’ll probably only do one magazine each so not trying to get carried away. Anyone know of any safe spots on state land nearby to do this? Really would like a berm and away from any people so we don’t disturb anyone doing it. Any advice is really appreciated!

Hello everyone! I'm looking to visit the UP in February for the Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech. While visiting, I would like to try Snowmobiling. Is there anywhere that I could learn/rent a snowmobile for a couple hours to try it out? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Bf and I are going to Mackinac island staying in a B&B in St ignace. We definitely want to explore Mackinac Island but wondering what restaurant we should visit? Stores you recommend? Activities? We’ll be staying at UP till the 8th so any other places we should check out?

We're heading to the UP for vacation the last week of the month. I wasn't expecting balmy weather but I'm a little disheartened by videos of snow. We have quite a bit of outdoor time planned - is there a chance it could warm back up a little into a more typical fall? I realize the weather is probably stupidly unpredictable just like Missouri, but for those who have lived there awhile, is it possible?

I want to walk at night, but don't know much about black bears or the UP. I've been hiking and have seen very fresh bear scat. Usually I sing (badly) or recite Walt Whitman.

There's a logging road near where I'm staying and a dark walk would be possible. The track is wide. I'm near Porkies State Park.

Would it be crazy to walk it at night?

I'm planning a trip to the Keweenaw peninsula soon and I'm fascinated by the Old Copper Culture. I know there's so historic sites covering more recent copper mining but are there any publically accessible places you're able to see the prehistoric mining pits?

I've read up on the "must do" things but wondering if there are any locals in here with advice that the blogs and guidebooks don't have. Open to ideas anywhere from Marquette to the west and Whitefish Point to the east. Traveling with a dog, fwiw. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Going to be working in the Escanaba area for a few days here and there.

What is the fishing like this time of year? Mainly looking at just shore fishing smaller rivers/lakes/ponds to pass the time. Any insight on what to fish for in September or fishing spots would be greatly appreciated!

Willing to travel a bit outside of Escanaba if needed.

My sister is pulling together a recipe box for my nephew's wedding and I am trying to remember my grandmother's (Kearsarge) beef pasty recipe. Everything I find uses rutabaga which I don't remember her using. Does anyone just use potatoes? Also we always ate them with ketchup but I'm wondering if there was anyone else used any other sauce for dipping. Thank you and please excuse me if I'm abusing this sub.

We will be visiting Porcupine State Park and McLain State Park at the beginning of October. I am aware there are many waterfalls to see, but in your opinion, what are the best ones to see in that area? We don't mind a hike to view them.

I love viewing and photographing wildlife (from a safe and respectful distance of course) and while the birding is plentiful in the UP I have had a hard time running into mammals outside of the Seney wildlife refuge. I do plenty of backcountry camping well off the beaten path and seem to have relatively bad luck or am not looking in good spots. Anyone willing to drop some places where they have had good luck with wildlife viewing experiences? If you don’t want to share on here I am more than happy to talk in dms !!! Thanks !!

i have two days (september 7&8) to explore pictured rocks and i need recommendations on what to see and do! i am going with my grandmother who is in good shape to still do some trails but nothing too strenuous. i don’t know the area at all and don’t want to lead us astray on a expert level trail. thinking about doing the self guided waterfall tour (munising falls, miners falls, elliot falls, and sable falls). definitely going to do a boat tour one of the days and trying to decide on Riptide Ride or the Spray Falls tour(also could be interested in the glass bottom or shipwreck tour?), i know they tour different areas and they both look wonderful. any suggestions on what else we should do or if we should do something else instead? thanks in advance - a 23 year old girl and her 70 year old gma

I know there was a post here about a month ago asking if a normal car could make it (no) - but I wanted to know about current conditions.

I've got 24" of wading depth but don't really want to go above 16". Did it last year in late October, but figured I'd ask in case it's been wet in the eastern U.P. and the puddles might be deeper.

Hey everyone. Been living in Marquette a number of years and got a gravel bike this year. I’m wondering if there are any trails in particular in the Copper Harbor area that are great for gravel riding. My brother is coming up next month and we’d love to do some camping and biking up there for a couple days. Thanks all!
