Game Mastering How much XP can you earn in 'The Enemy Within' campaign? We have a summary!
𧎠How much XP can you earn in The Enemy Within campaign?
We've put together a summary of how much Experience Points (XP) players can earn throughout the epic The Enemy Within campaign! On the next four non-spoiler slides, you'll find detailed calculations.
How would you develop your character with that much XP to spend? đ Share your ideas in the comments!
𧎠Important Notes. These numbers are very approximate, as they depend on several factors:
- Number of sessions
- XP awarded per session
- What the players manage to achieve
- Whether you include side plots or optional adventures, etc.
đ The XP rewards themselves are listed at the end of each chapter (see screen 5 for an example).
đ Our Assumptions for these Calculations:
- There are 49 chapters across the five parts of the campaign.
- There are 267 different XP reward types.
- Players will earn XP for rewards in every chapter.
- Some rewards are listed as a range (from minimum to maximum), which is reflected on the graphics as "Minimum" and "Maximum."
- XP for ambitions are not included in these calculations.
- Players will receive 50 XP per session.
- A session lasts about 4 hours.
â Campaign Length Estimates. The campaign may last:
- AÂ minimum of 59 sessions (screen 2). It's almost impossible to finish the campaign so quickly!
- An average of 106 sessions (screen 3). This is a realistic value if we play without side quests.
- 175 sessions (screen 4) is already quite a lot! If you're planning for more than that⌠the sky is the limit! đ
How long were your TeW campaigns? Did you play in the 1st edition or the 4th edition?

Huge thanks to Michal from Uber Warhammer Discord for meticulously gathering all this data from each chapter â great job! đ

It took us roughly 40 3 hour sessions to finish pbtt
I canât comprehend finishing that campaign in 10

Me too! That's why I wrote that it's almost impossible, but if the GM and PC are focused on a concise plot without side plots and playing out various carnival attractions, or quickly solving the mystery, then why not?

Took my group 11 sessions to play out PBtT. I didn't want to add too much and wanted to ensure that we finish the campaign. We played session 76 last week, and next week should be the end of EiR. 76 sessions, but it still took us 3.5 years to play out bi-weekly. Ending with around 9k xp.

my players are at the start of Power Behind the Throne and have a little under 3 000 xp

Then you are at a pretty low XP value! Is it because of the low number of sessions or low XP per session?

good question ! I follow the reward system given and give them a bonus 50 xp everytime
I haven't counted the session so it may be the cause, they don't feel underpowered and haven't completed their skill tree so it's all good imo, it give them something to look forward to

Playing shorter sessions and weâre about 100 sessions in and on book 3/5.

Oh hey good to know my High Elf Mage might be High Magic viable by the tail end!

Last number of session is the only one I can imagine actually happening, the rest either are some speedruns or 12h gaming sessions

Yeah, I award exp way more often than that. I also frequently run side quests. I spent ages in Altdorf

So with that in mind, how much XP do you think your PCs will have at the end of the campaign? How much do they have now? :)

Well, we are finishing up in altdorf in the enemy in shadows (so still very early days), and the players have around 1k each)
That being said, I level enemies to what I think they can handle. I have no idea how much they will have, nor how many will still be alive. But it should be fun.

Thanks for the summary. Great to plan ahead and stuff.
My group doesn't do the "xp per session" thingie and we are at 5k2 xp at about half of The Horned Rat, so it seems we are pretty much on track!

How much XP do you need to "Max" a character?
4
u/A_Town_Called_Malus Jun 29 '25
You'd need to define "max". There is no attribute or skill cap.
2
u/another_sad_dude Jun 29 '25
As in most stealthy thief, smoothes noble and best handgunner.
But I remember it wrong then, recalled you could only increase to plus 20 over the starting value. But in my defense it's been a few years đ

In 4th edition, there isn't any cap on how many skill and characteristic advances you can take. So there isn't any max xp in the system, especially once you factor in talents, some of which have no cap on the number of times they can be taken.
For example, the NPC Elector Countess Emanuelle Von Liebwitz has 25 ranks of the Wealthy talent. That is 32,500xp just for her ranks in that one talent if bought by a PC.

You need a minimum of advances to go to the next tier, but you do not have to go go next tier and can keep advancing skills indefinitely.
So you could stay in tier 1 of a career and level up the skills you have there to 100 đ¤ˇââď¸

We finished the campaign in around 172 sessions. My players earned around 12000 exp each.
