Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Solved Where is this taken of my Grandad?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but while fixing an old family album i found this photo of my grandad (man on the right). My mum desperately wants to know where it was taken and my best idea was to come to reddit to ask since i have no clue My grandad fought in World War 2 and passed before i was alive so i cant ask him anything. The writing above the photo is other peoples names like Albert, Sheila and Dorothy who are on the page too and have also passed, there is also what looks like “masmarshal” or “mr marshal” but im not sure I do know my grandad did not write this or put the album together, that would be my aunt who also doesnt know where the photo is taken. I cant read whatever is written on the back of the photo unfortunately. If there is a better place to post this please let me know and thanks for any help anyone can give knowing where this is taken! I can try answer any questions if they help find the location!

This is an old photo from my dad's band taken for promotional material and I'm struggling to find where it is / was located. He said he remembers it being around Warren near a machine shop or factory. I believe this photo was taken in 2005.

I think it was somewhere in Warren. It was at a machine shop or factory of some type. The name had two words that started with M, so it worked out great for us to use that big statue type thing for our picture. Lol.

Illustration of a statue with a sad face and two long, antler-like horns (in Moon River by Tim Hopgood)

My kid’s been asking me about this since she was two, and it’s been way too long for me not to have an answer.

Some pages in Moon River show famous monuments like the Taj Mahal and Moai statues. But there’s also this one: a statue with a sad-looking face and two long, antler-like horns.

Does anyone know what monument or statue this is supposed to represent?

Open Filming locations/screenshots from Outlaws (Las leyes de la frontera) 2021 movie

I'm looking for the exact filming locations of those screenshots from the Spanish movie Outlaws (Las leyes de la frontera) shot in late 2020 in Girona, Manresa, Montblanc and various towns and villages around Barcelona. Since the movie is meant to portray life in 1978, some of these might be hard to figure out. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I saw this interesting location in the intro for the movie Heidi (2015). Does anyone know where this might be?

It does not seem to be the same place as where the rest of the movie is set.

Thank you!

Weird image from the 2000's

Post image
18 Upvotes

For context, I bought a vintage Dell PC from the year 1999, when inspecting the drive I found this image in the /Downloads folder titled 1.bpm (later converted to a PNG by me).

It's date is August 23rd 2004 5:36:09PM. In the image there is visible a logo on a building with the text being Equation Logics/Logiqs.

After searching online for a company or building with such name, nothing shows up, which leads me to belive this image is either art or a render, but I'm not sure (the compression doesn't help).

So I need help to figure out if this is a location or not, since it does seem like an interesting picture.

THX ツ

Can we identify where this old photo is taken. My family believes it was taken in Montreal Canada, sometime in the 1930s. Our initial guess is Square Saint-Louis. But we can't pin point the architecture in the background

Solved Somewhere on the Balearic Islands (Spain) around the year 2000

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi,

Most of my vacation destinations where on the Balearic Islands in my childhood. I had the time of my life on these islands. Someday i want to revisit most of the places there. So far this is the only place where i have no clue. My best guess is in some bay of Mallorca, since most of the time we where on Mallorca but i can't exclude Menorca or Ibiza.

The picture was taken on a film camera so it should be a 30-50mm full frame focal length equivalent. Also i think the place have to be good accessible by car. We were not a very hiking enthusiastic family.

WHERE IS THIS MOVIE LOCATION?? HELP!

Thumbnail

Hello, need to find the address or exact location of this pic?? From the 1991 movie Out for Justice. Was shot in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. It wasn’t a real pool bar but a dressed up location somewhere in Brooklyn or LA. One wall says “Bay Ridge Electric” but I’m not sure if that’s set design or a real business ad. Scene shows a car driving down a street and turns right into the set pool bar exterior. Just after 25 mins into the movie

I’ve been trying to find this for like 20 years.

Open Where exactly might this painting be?

Hello everyone, first-time poster. I hope this is the right spot to get help. My friend really likes this painting, and I'd like to take them to see the real-world version. It is titled "The Green Mountain, Creed Colorado," but I have been unable to find what might be the exact location in Colorado. I believe this was painted mid-1900s. Obviously, the trees may not be the same, but maybe the mountain with this angle is possible to find?

Maybe coordinates for Google Maps would help, so that I can plan a trip there sometime soon. Thanks in advance!

Sorry if this is against the rules. I read through, and I believe it is ok to share, but if not, I can remove.
