This specific one's a special case, he actively tried to raise Thanos into a different, less genocidal person, hoping he'd be better than him. It backfired, hard because now Thanos is even more tyrannical than the typical mad titan. So he basically went "Fuck this shit, and fuck you specifically."
I actually really like that he still calls him boy. Like he still sees Thanos as his son, but he’s severely stepped out of line and has to reprimand him.
I wish people would make more stories that lean into his supernatural side. A demonic bounty hunter is such a badass idea for a character — why not have him go after evil sorcerers, demons that escape hell, or even just dictators and war criminals?
Also another thing to note is that penance works no matter how small the pain or how RIGHTEOUS, so if he used it on like Captain America Steve would be killed as well, even if the pain he's inflicted was for a heroic cause
I mean there's an inherent problem with giving someone an iconic power that's meant to be an instant one-hit KO with no defense (and almost impossible to dodge), and then have them appear in crossovers.
I mean, the unbound stare lets him punch up high, but if you have sold your soul or stored it and are immune to just the heat from the hellfire you pretty much neg most of the Rider's hax and just have to deal with physical part until Zarathos starts getting personal tired of his avatar bumming out
It’s sad that one of the most badass comic characters has ended up like this. GR was doing great being the silent powerhouse whose ceiling most readers weren’t aware of. I feel like the more popular his power became, the more of a jobber he became; with writers using his penance stare as a mere means to show how badass another character was.
(And so we’re clear I don’t mind the penance stare having counters, but when said counters are written so lazily that the power becomes a joke, yea I get pissed off)

I can never tell how much the parody derailing from the cadence and rhyme scheme of the original is meant to be part of the joke and how much of it is just dumb kids repeating a meme format they don't understand--like a lot of scalers have probably never even heard Metallica's "Fuel" and just do this bit because of primate-brained cultural inertia but at the same time I think deliberately overblowing the format can be pretty funny or I retire
Know whats the worse one ive ever seen? How the penance stare doesnt work if you have to many eyes??? Like how, its basically an attack that burns your soul using hellfire how does having multiple eyes block that entirelty?????
