Not surprising. Ace has basically no feats and Natsu is a main character. Unless you really, really scaled Ace on how powerful he may have been there was no way he was winning.

Though DB doesn't actually seem to understand how logias work.

They do understand how Logias work; Logia users can be caught by surprise or before they react and still be hit by non-haki attacks. This is shown in Chapter 158 on page 6, when Luffy hits Smoker from behind because it was completely unexpected. They can also be overpowered by stronger elements or their elemental weakness. This is shown on multiple occasions, but most notably when Spoiler

He chose to stay solid. It wasn't the heat but the fact that he wasn't in his logia form
