Serious Super Mario (Mario Games) vs. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic Games)
Characters
Mario
Use feats from main series games and spin-offs (Mario Party, Sports Games, Mario & Luigi, etc).
Sonic
Modern Sonic only. Ignore Classic Sonic feats.
Fighting Parameters
No prep, prior knowledge, or outside help.
Going for the kill but in-character otherwise.
Fight starts in Peach's castle.
Don't take mid-gameplay shit into account (for example, Mario getting killed by touching a slow-moving Goomba). Support your claims with actual game canon.
Character Versions
Ignore versions of characters that are canonical considered separate people. This includes Paper Mario and the Smash Bros fighters.
Only use non-gameplay feats (comics, tv, etc.) if they can reasonably be supported by the games' canon.
In other words, don't just say 'lol archee sanic stumps'. Back up those claims with game lore.
Rounds
Round 1: Items off
Round 2: Items on, though no invincibility or speed-boosting items
Round 3: All items. Speed, strength, and durability equalized.

Is there any evidence of the actual weight and force of the crystal things in MARIO galaxy? Because they hurt everything in the game when you shoot them and you shoot them like a machine gun. I also vaguely remember multiple power ups allowing MARIO to fly really fast in galaxy, so could he fly around and machine gun huge diamonds at sonic for this fight? We might have a sleeping giant on our hands here

Dunno much about Sonic proper, but what's his highest damage output?
I'm racking my brain on Mario's cartoonish durability (since if he's gonna have anything going for him it'll be that), and the main things I can think of there are:
- His stomach and body have a large enough capacity that he can drink gallons of water with no ill side effect (Superstar Saga)
- Is simultaneously strong enough to flatten a baby, while as a baby can be perfectly flattened with no ill side effects (Partners in Time)
- Withstood being launched from the Mushroom Kingdom all the way to the Cap Kingdom and suffered nothing more than a little dirt nap, mind that while the two nations neighbor each other they're still on completely separate continents. (Super Mario Odyssey)
In refreshing myself on M&L stuff, I also found out that can combine all his powerups at once in the Super Mario-Kun manga. I doubt that matters at all under the conditions you laid out but it's still kinda funny to me.

Mario. While Sonic is extremely fast, Mario has dealt with enemies and problems that required him to go beyond even the speed of light. Bowser in Hus giant form is capable of outrunning black hole gravity (M&L Bowsers inside story.), Mario is even able to preform several flips before coming in contact with a planet(SMG 1&2) while flying fast enough to travel between solar systems and galaxies on short moments. Pyromancy became something Mario can do on his own further in the series, in some games Mario has used to levitate. Mario can also Slow the flow of Time with out items, as Zone Speed was Described as Slowing time around him. Mario I also able create weapons and objects out of pure Magic, he was able to create a hockey stick in sports Mix game and created invisible wall in Mario Tennis Aces.
Mario has way to many items that nullifies Sonics arsenal. Battle Cards can Stop time, Do unblockable over time Damage and force characters to drop any item there holding. While wisps are extremely powerful, Marios blaster from Kingdom Battle was Stated to have he ability to Demerge or extract to objects or properties from each other, So no point in using the wisp if Mario can force them out of Sonic.
3.The outcome would be same as above. Mario will still have items to spare while sonic will be burning through his arsenal faster than he burns hi reputation within the gaming industry.

R1- Sonic, cause you know, F=MA, so boost, there isn't going to be any way for Mario to catch Sonic, according to the Guinness book for records, which Sega officiated, the Acceleration part is going to be faster then light speed, even without that, light speed attack, which is a technique, not the shoes, kinda makes it a null point, and time break (Generations), another technique, not a item, allows sonic to nullify any time techniques Mario uses R2- Now with the Red Gem from 06 that time technique is unlimited, then Void wisp just eats Mario, or Ring Time does, or Magic Hands, Chaos control into literal black holes, and the emeralds revive sonic if he's somehow killed, don't know if that one counts for this round since they do it by bringing him into his super form, but lets just say he drops out of it immediately, also just more F=MA R3: Now Sonic is hyper sonic for as long as the fight takes, the ring limit is still there since the dialogue in SA2's Final Hazard makes it canon, but rings are goddam EVERYWHERE, and a light speed flying, teleporting, magnetic/ vacuum creating hedgehog who is known due to the end cutscene for Generations to carry a unreasonable amount of rings on him already is going to circle the planet, and every other planet in the milky way during stopped time to collect enough rings to last months, and you know during a stalemate Mario is eventually have a fraction of a second of vulnerability between power-ups, which will be used to boost him through a Sun, because Generations, and Hyper Sonic

Aside from that not really being the case, one of Super Sonic's best feats is from 06 and Forces confirms Sonic gets stronger each game, so it'd be silly to not include them.

Round 1: Sonic speedblitzes. Putting aside the questionable stretches people make to try and prove he's FTL in Base in the game canon, he's still fast enough to create tornadoes by running in a circle (Sonic Heroes - Whirlwind Attack, Sonic and the Black Knight - opening cutscene), fast enough to casually dodge multidirectional barrages of laser fire (Sonic Unleashed - opening cutscene, Sonic Lost World), and fast enough to outrun a gigantic fricking truck that can drive along the side of a wall (Sonic Generations - City Escape). Mario doesn't have any speed feats without items to come close to this that I know of, and Sonic is strong enough to KO him (Sonic Generations - physically defeated Perfect Chaos, a casual city buster).
Round 2: Sonic wins again. I can't think of any items Mario can use that will let him match Sonic's speed, since invincibility and speed boosting items are forbidden by the prompt. Anything else tends to be stuff that lets him shoot fireballs, throw hammers, glide etc and that won't stop him getting speedblitzed since Sonic can dodge the projectiles.
Round 3: With all stats equalised, and all items allowed, it comes down to Super Sonic vs Mario with a Super Star power up. Assuming no time limit for either, both seem to make you immune to all physical damage, but Super Sonic has much better attack feats (Helping to defeat Finalhazard, which was moving fast enough to wipe out civilization on the planet if it impacted earth, helping defeat the Egg Salamander which was powered by the Sol Emeralds, and most importantly, helping defeat Solaris which was in the process of destroying the entirety of the space-time continuum to wipe out reality). The star power up doesn't have these kinds of feats as far as I know so if anyone wins in this, it's Super Sonic.
Note that I don't have too much knowledge of obscure Mario lore so there might be some stuff I'm missing here. Please let me know if there are feats I don't know about, especially for Mario's speed in base or the star power up.
