Books Guide to editions of the Witcher books

This is a little project I compiled in last days, being an expansion on my previous covers of the Last Wish post. I wanted to list, and sort, all editions of books in the Witcher series, published in various languages (30 + Polish). Result of that ended in shape of a PDF file (6 MB) - which you can now browse and download!

Here is a sneak peek, if you can't right now (e.g. mobile), but want to see what is inside.

Take in mind, that it's still a WIP (supposed to by updated in future, at least once a year - as we can expect more editions after Netflix boosted series' popularity). So if you have anything to add or correct - please do! E.g. I miss many covers' artist names.

Besides that, here are some specific questions:

  • Which editions are sold in English-speaking countries except UK & USA?. I suppose American editions are sold in Canada, but what about e.g. Australia, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand?

  • Are there any pirated editions, other than Iranian ones?

  • How is a witcher called in Dutch, Greek, Portuguese (European), Romanian, Swedish and Turkish translations?

  • Last but not least, which edition(s) do you own? :) And what do you think about it, both quality-wise, and translation itself?

Finally🙂

The audiobook is unabridged and, once again, only available from audible.

The physical book, released tomorrow, will be a hardcover and has two stickers on the front - Spiegel & Netflix. No idea if those will be removable.

The book is translated by Erik Simon, who also translated all the other Witcher books. The audiobook is narrated by Oliver Siebeck, who also narrated all other German Witcher audiobooks. The book has 320 pages and the audiobook has a duration of 8 hours and 36 minutes.

Tower of Swallow Lore questions I guess?

I'm going through my first read and finished chapter seven of Tower of the Swallow today. When Avallac'h told Geralt that male and female elves began banging humans because they got bored of each other, did he only mean the Aen Seidhe, or Aen Elle as well (beside Lara Dorren of course)? Since he literally compared humans to cockroaches, one would get the impression that they didn't consider them worthy of getting intimate with.

Another thing is the prophecy and the white frost. Is it supposed to include all the worlds, or just the world that the story takes place in?

Books Yennefer was in the wrong

There is no justification for Yennefer playing both Geralt and Istredd. She wanted her cake and eat it too this is one of the problems Yennefer has which is why she’s a bad partner.

Lady of the Lake One word at the black cat inn? Spoiler

I am currently reading the Lady of the Lake, and during Ciri’s time/space travelling she encounters the black cat inn. She mentions that

“How does it happen, thought Ciri, what can it be ascribed to, that in all worlds, places and times, in all languages and dialects that one word always sounds comprehensible? And always similar?”.

Which word is she referring to? Ride?

Games Is the 'Hanged Man's Tree' mentioned in Witcher 2 the same as in Witcher 3? [SPOILER] Spoiler

During the awesome animated flashbacks of Witcher 2, Geralt remembers a battle at the Hanged Man's Tree; between he, Letho, and the other Vipers vs. the Wild Hunt. The battle ended with Geralt trading places with Yennefer, who was Eredin's prisoner, and gives up his 'soul' in the bargain.

At the beginning of his search for Ciri in 3, Geralt also arrives at a Hanged Man's Tree in Velen. Aside from it being a horrific sight, he seems to give it a meaningful glance.

Are they the same locations? If so, why didn't Geralt draw more attention to it? Seems like an incredibly important place to me.

The Witcher 3 Is the Witcher universe “Slavic”?

I’m now replaying the Witcher 3 and had some thoughts. I heard a lot from Russian gamers that they consider this universe “Slavic”, that’s the reason for example why most of them why they prefer to play in Russian dub and not in English (even if they know the language). But is it? Is the universe of Andrzej Sapkowski can be described like that? Sure, Witcher 3 has some slavic flavor: huts and peasants in Velen, some monsters names, Olgierd Von Everec, his brother and their band they can be described as such. But other than that, I can’t think of other examples. We can use the term “Slavic” in the context of another fantasy universe only in terms of linguistics and visuals. And most other things fell in my opinion in western medieval category. The rulers on the continent are kings and emperors, cities like Novigrad or Oxenfurt have western architectural styles (I’m not even talking about the region of Toussaint), Skellige and its people are clearly Vikings. I think this universe is more representative of Poland itself which always was a blend of Eastern European and Western European culture, religions and ways of life.

I am curious to hear from Polish gamers and book readers. Do you consider this universe Slavic or there is some truth to my assessment?

Thank you!

Books What non-major characters from early books have you noticed returning in later books?

As stated in the title.

[SPOILER] For example Toruviel who appears first in World's end appears again in Lady of the lake, when Jarre is returning from war with Lucienne and other wounded soliders. The soliders share bread with Toruviel and other elves and it's a nice mini-arc for her, because when we see her first she has nothing but hate for humans, but when we see her again, after the war she asks them for help and doesn't show any animosity towards them.

I wonder if anyone has noticied anything simmilar, because I really love these details.

Time of Contempt Attack on Glevitzingen - Help me understand

Thumbnail

In the beginning of Time of Contempt, the Four Kingdoms (Temeria, Redania, Aedirn and Kaedwen) are anticipating the war with Nilfgaard and preparing an attack on the second night after the July new moon.

  • Disguised Aedirnian soldiers are readied to attack Nilfgaard
  • Temerian boats are stationed by the Jaruga in Dol Angra
  • Nilfgaard has also set up an army in Dol Angra, and is waiting for provocation

During the night of the Thanedd coup in Chapter 4, soldiers under Aedirnian and Lyrian standards attack a Nilfgaardian border post in the Dol Angra valley.

What I don't understand is that "Glevitzingen" seemed a dead ringer for the false-flag attack on Gleiwitz (now Gliwice), which was an entirely a staged provocation by Germany (to my understanding).

Was the attack on Glevitzingen, like the attack on Gleiwitz, a false-flag attack staged by Nilfgaard, i.e., Nilfgaardian troops disguised in Aedirnian and Lyrian livery?

Or was it actual Aedirnian and Lyrian soldiers attacking Nilfgaard? (This is what Sabrina assumes, which is why she becomes furious that Demawend and Meve did not restrain themselves). We can assume that the Aedirnian forces mentioned by Aplegatt were not held back, because Vizimir's warning did not reach Demawend due to the ... interference in the matter by the Scoia'tael. So the Aedirnian and Lyrian troops were given the go-ahead to attack Nilfgaard.

Or was it indeed a false-flag attack, because of the detail that Demawend's troops were disguised -- most likely, as Nilfgaardians? Since, if they were disguised, they certainly wouldn't have been disguised as themselves. If they had put their plan into attack, it would have been a Nilfgaardian attack on the Kingdoms, not the other way around?

Were the Four Kingdoms also planning a false-flag attack, but didn't get the opportunity to, Nilfgaard set theirs in action first? Both sides were looking for a reason for war, to stage a provocation?

Discussions Which actors from the Netflix show would you keep for another attempt at the Witcher?

Obviously, Netflix completely butchered the series, however I do think certain actors nailed their roles with whatever little they had to work with. If I could keep 2 actors to play the same role in a new, faithful adaptation, it would be the actors for Tissaia and Dijkstra.
