Help Simple questions and Help thread - Month of August

Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 24H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Windows 95 was originally launched on August 24, 1995 and received critical acclaim. It introduced key concepts that are still used by Windows, like the taskbar and the Start menu.

General Question How can I sync files from a computer to another (both windows 11)

So I work at a job and I like to do work on my personal laptop from home, but I also work on the work computer. I have a folder with multiple documents (excel, ppt etc.), images and other stuff. How can I sync it so every time I make a change on any computer, I can open it on the other computer the next day? My file ends up pretty big at the end of the year (so I need smth long term) so Google drive is not an option for me. I want smth free because my work will not cover and I don't want these expenses.

General Question Would this constitute "tech support" and thus be forbidden here?(Question about how to handle kernel level anti-cheat software)

I scanned some of the recent posts here. Some of the posts sounded to me like the kind of thing that might be considered tech support, but apparently are not.

I'd appreciate any insight.

Discussion How to change permissions on SYSTEM folder? Read use case.

This question has been asked many times before. The answer is always "Don't do that".

I'm trying to consolidate a lifetime of old hard drives. I'll normally organize my files on a separate D: (Data) drive, but many Windows programs want to save in their own default locations. Sometimes there's not even an option. The rest of my family will always accept the default. Rather than attempt to locate and extract any potentially important data, it's easier to delete what I don't need (.exe, .dll, .sys, .cab, etc.) in order to reduce space. At least this preserves the folder structure.

Ideally, I would set all the permissions on the legacy drive to Everyone. I can almost do that. However, the SYSTEM folder/files are now seemingly impossible. I'm currently running Windows 11 10.0.26100. When I go to change permissions on an (inactive/retired) SYSTEM object, the options are either grayed or will jump to gray as soon as I click on the [Change] button. There's got to be a way?

General Question Need help cloning a hard drive

Hello, thank you very much for taking your time to help me, it’s very kind of you

I have a little problem

I bought a new PC for my mother so that she can work in better conditions and I would like to transfer her entire HDD to an external HDD which I would like to use to start Windows and copy all its files, (there is an SSD but much too small to clone the HDD (64GB...)), it is important that she does not have to do anything on it (connect to all it is software)

Is it possible to start and use Windows on an external hard drive?

Both PCs have a Windows 10 license

My mother's current PC is a 1TB HDD laptop.

The new one is a 64GB SSD desktop PC that I would like connected to as said just before the 1TB external HDD too

Thank you very much for your time and your kindness ❤️

General Question Is there anyway to combine the content of a set of folders into another set of folders (More exp. on desc.)

Imagine you have folder A and folder B, folder A contains in it folders 1, 2 and 3; folder B also contains folder called 1, 2, 3; for reference I'll call them A1, A2 A3 for folder and B1, B2, B3 for folder B; is there anyway to combine folder A and folder B (Or their contents) in a way that folder A1 combines with B1, A2 combines with B2 and A3 combines with B3?

In this context I call "combining" moving all files from folder A1 to B1 and all files with repeated name get overwritten by the folder A1 file.

we suppose both A and B have other folders that are not repeated between them and the same for folders like A1 with B1, A2 with B2, A3 with B3...

Or do I have to do by hand 969 folders?

General Question Remove Previous Backups?

Fresh install of Windows 11 -- first time using Windows in a long time. The installer offers to restore from a backup from 2017 and 2018. How do I remove these? I went to the usual places like "All Devices" in OneDrive/Microsoft Store - no joy. Still appears there. I can't for the life of me remember how to do this.

General Question Back in Window XP/9X days, how were most computers not infected with malware when it took longer to download patches compared to how long it took to get malware?

The below article from 2004 states unpatched Windows XP gets compromised in about 20 minutes after connecting to the Internet. Many people had dial up or slow broadband at the time and I remember taking hours to get updates following a clean install from CD, which was likely over a year or two old. There would often not have been a router to do NAT. Also you often had to do Windows Update manually after connecting to the Internet, further causing a delay.

General Question Windows keeps changing my default PDF reader

I use PDFGear to study, but I want to keep Microsoft Edge as my default PDF reader so that unnecessary PDFs don’t show up in PDFGear’s recent files. I just open PDFGear and my main files are there, and I open them directly from there. I’m not sure if windows has recognized it as the app I use often, or what, but it keeps changing my default PDF reader to PDFGear.

Discussion Since Windows 10 will be retiring soon and I dislike Windows 11 I may switch over to Windows Server 2022, or accept the security risks and vulnerability.

Yeah, if you read the title, I am pretty mixed on Windows 11, despite it improving each time, I find Windows 11 to be clunky, and not satisfying to use, while how it looks, is something I can praise, except for the centered taskbar, thankfully it can be fixed. And how it runs on my PC, is something I also criticize. To put it nicely, 11 on my low end PC that was manufactured in 2021, Windows 11 ran like garbage. So I had options, I switched over to Linux, which I found to be bland as time went on, and I switched back to Windows 10. Now that the support date is upon us, I now have two options, accept the security risks and more vulnerability, or switch over to Windows Server 2022. So yeah, I will probably do that.
