New Tech Questions [MegaThread] Career Questions

To minimize the number of "new tech question" threads, I've gone ahead and created a Mega Thread for new technicians and people interested in the wind industry to post in.

What to post here:

  1. Questions about schools
  2. Questions about companies
  3. Questions about wind turbine industry
  4. Questions about wind turbine life

Anything related to that! Figured this is a great way to condense knowledge into one thread versus hundreds of "should I" posts with one easy to search resource!

Wind Technology How do I get into the industry?

Hey, I’m looking to get into trying to be Wind Turbine Technician. Basically from what I’ve heard is basically you gotta know someone to get you on. That true? I’m really interested on getting out on the road and eventually hopefully make some good money. Does anyone know companies currently hiring that’ll do OTJ training?

Wind Technology Wind turbine technicians — what makes your job easier or harder on a daily basis?

Hi everyone,

I’m really curious about the day-to-day realities of wind turbine technicians and how you keep things running out in the field. I’d love to hear from folks doing the work about what the job is actually like — the smooth parts, the headaches, and the things you wish were different.

A few areas I’m especially interested in:

  • Workflow pain points: What parts of your repair or maintenance routine feel the most inefficient or frustrating?
  • Work orders & scheduling: How do you usually get your “plan of the day,” and does it line up with the realities in the field?
  • Tools & technology: Which systems/apps actually help you, and which ones feel like they just add extra steps?
  • Safety & environment: Are there situations where current processes or tools don’t support you as well as they could?
  • Resources & dependencies: Do delays usually come from missing parts, communication gaps, weather, or something else?
  • Your wishlist: If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about how your work is managed, what would it be?

I know everyone’s busy, so even a quick response would mean a lot. Hearing directly from people in the field gives a much clearer picture than anything in reports or articles.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

Tech Support Calculate airspeed from kW/RPM?

Is it possible to calculate the airspeed if you have the kW/RPM? I realize the RPM are limited at a certain point. I'm guessing the resistance of the generator then increases, increasing the power generated. I'm just not sure if you can back calculate the airspeed from that or if they're just loosely related.

Media Wind Turbine Apprenticeship interview, looking for advice?

Well lads, I’ve been invited to an interview this Thursday (21st) for a Wind Turbine Technician apprenticeship and I’d like to get some advice. Has anyone here gone through the interview process for this role or something similar?

I’d appreciate any advice on what to expect, how to prepare, or key things they might be looking for. Thanks!

Equipment Tool bags

had a question of what bags you guys recommend, we get issued our individual climb bags but i like to have another bag to hold bigger tools and such to hang on chain hoist while i carry my ipad and hand controller with me.

i know about the tech series vetpro pacs and i like those but maybe some others have another option to give me, im currently use a miwalkee bag that came with my electric ratchet but its kind of low quality so maybe i can get advice from other techs thankyou

Equipment Seagreen Windfarm

I've got my first trip offshore to the Seagreen Windfarm, mostly Vestas turbines.

It's been a few months since doing my WAH. Anyone got an idea of what ladder/lift system the Turbines there use? I wouldn't mind brushing up before heading out.

Tech Support Trying to get into wind industry but no company will respond to emails

I've been looking to get into the wind industry for the past 6 months sending out emails asking for information about apprenticeships both in Ireland and Australia to every company that i can find operating or maintaining wind farms and 1 out of the 30+ i have emailed has given me the time of day to respond.

What is some advice for someone with no previous trade experience looking to get an entry level apprenticeship in the wind industry. Who are the best names in the industry who are open to taking in and training people to become wind techs.

Tech Support Looking for Advice — Getting into Wind Industry in NZ (GWO + Rope Access + Mining/Geotech Experience)

Hi everyone, I’ve recently moved to New Zealand and I’m looking to break into the wind energy sector here. I come with over 5 years of rope access experience, mainly in mining and geotechnical projects (Australia and South America). I completed my GWO and Blade Repair certifications with the goal of transitioning into the wind industry.

The challenge I’m facing now is figuring out where to start — I’ve been trying to find companies or contractors that operate in wind energy in NZ, but haven’t had much luck. Most listings I find are overseas or require local experience I don’t yet have.

If anyone working in the New Zealand wind sector could share some advice or point me toward companies, contractors, or even entry pathways, I’d be super grateful.

Appreciate any guidance or leads. Thanks in advance! Cheers

Wind Technology viable experience?

I(21m) have worked at CS Wind plant in southern Colorado, I don’t know if it’s very familiar, but i worked my way up high in the ladder for only being there almost 3 years, I worked in quality and building the internals of the towers themselves from installation of parts and wiring. I was a trainer as well and knew all the OEMs like the back of my hand(Vestas,GE, Siemens). Was very proficient in GE and was a foremen of building these sections. Blah blah did all the paperwork in quality as well as final inspections before they were shipped out. Now i do electrical testing/troubleshooting/programming for giant circuit breaker boards up to around 5000A boards for data centers , stadiums, and other large complexes. Was wondering if my experience would get me an entry level position in the wind field or higher. Please be kind i’m just curious and really all i know is wind turbines, electricity, and computers and want to pursue a further career.
