Young Person’s Wine Night Vol 3: Iberia (and a French imposter)
For the third instalment of the “Young Person’s Wine Night” (see previous posts) we tried to accompany the wine with some more substantial food, as opposed to just snacks. We had just got back from a trip to Spain, Portugal, and France so we decided to go with Iberia as a (loose) theme. To round out the lineup, we did break the theme a little to include a white burgundy.
Wine list:
1. 2016 K5 Getariako Txakolina Kaiaren
2. 2018 Sylvain Langoureau Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru la Garenne
3. 2000 Urbina Rioja Selección
4. 2014 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Arana
5. Fonseca Porto 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Accompanying menu was:
- Lemon Stuffed Olives
- Patatas Bravas
- Espinacas con Garbanzos
- Pintxos/Montaditos (Manchego and tomato or chèvre and caramelised onions, on baguette)
- Veggie Paella
- Basque Cheesecake
There was supposed to be Pastel de Nata as well but I forgot to get them.
Tasting notes in comments.

Bravo!!!
I feel like the puliny might be a little lost in there, but everything looks delicious.

Yeah it was a bit of the odd-man-out in some ways but it was delicious and a great bridge from the starters to the “main”!

Notes on the wines:
2016 K5 Getariako Txakolina Kaiaren
Nose: white flowers (jasmine, citrus blossom), wet stone, orchard fruits (apple, pear), touch of pastry and wax
Palate: lime, lemon, grapefruit, green and red apple, pear, dry honey, floral, slate, river stone, flint, sea spray, iodine, touch of brioche
great balance and racing acidity, fresh, linear (with a few interesting detours), slight emerging secondary flavours
Finsh: long, minerality, sea spray, citrus, florals, astringent
Rating: 92
2018 Sylvain Langoureau Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru la Garenne
Nose: sweet white flowers, Fuji apple, pear, Greek yogurt, macadamias, vanilla, nutmeg, oak
Palate: ripe green apple and pear, candied grapefruit, lemon meringue, almond, macadamia, yogurt, cream, smoked Gouda, vanilla, baking spices, gentle oak, great complexity and intensity.
The primary fruit and secondary notes are well balanced alongside great acidity and some lovely reductive flintiness. Like many Sylvain Langoureau wines I have tried, the secondary notes are very prominent (in a good way).
Finish: long, minerality, citrus rind, baking spices, nuts
Rating: 92
2000 Urbina Rioja Selección
Nose: Tobacco leaf, green herbs, sweet black cherry, blackberry, baking spices, clay dirt
Palate: dried red cherry and black cherry, sour strawberry, touch of oak, rosemary, thyme, marinating spices, supple worn leather, savoury, drying gentle tannins, balanced, elegant
Finish; long, astringent, spicy, clay like, stone fruit pit
Not quite as intense or expressive as the same bottle I had a bit over a year ago, but still drinking well and quite tasty, could be bottle variation, drink soon.
Rating: 90
2014 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Arana
Nose: oak, sandalwood, desiccated coconut, dense black cherry, blackberry jam, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom
Palate: black cherry compote, ripe blackberries, plum, coconut, vanilla, oak, white chocolate, cardamom, nutmeg, clove, clay, stone fruit pit, paprika, oregano, leather, tobacco leaf, incredible intensity, balance, and complexity, like drinking sweet and savoury pastries
Finish: sweet black fruit jam, oak, red clay, salt brush, long and delicious
This won wine of the night for most people.
Rating: 94
Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny
Nose: roasted stone fruits, roast nuts, Christmas pudding, treacle, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, clove), milk chocolate, burnt caramel
Palate: caramel, chai, cinnamon bun, roast peaches, baked plum and pluot, creme brûlée, maraschino cherry, nuts, toffee
Finsh: sweet, complex, dense, stone fruit pit, maraschino cherry, caramel, toffee
Rating: 93
