For background in NE PA. I have a 14 seer heat pump that I run down to 22° then my oil kicks in. Looking for a insert for my open fireplace. It won't get used much. Only on weekends we're home if it's cold and during cold snaps where it doesn't get above 20. Is this good enough for that?

Advice for what kind of woodstove to add to a sketchy DIY Franklin stove

Upvotes

Living in a 1,200 sq ft colonial with what appears to be a weekend warrior's "grand design" from the mid-20th century - an antique Franklin stove literally shoved into the firebox. The damper is diamond plate steel that neither totally opens nor closes, and I can stick my arm around it into the flue to wave at Santa Claus. Hoping the experts here have ideas on how to make this weirdo functional.

Option 1: Small Low-Clearance Stove Nestle something compact into the existing firebox. We'd like to supplement our oil heat when its very cold. Will this be able to keep up? Will we lose a lot of radiant heat if we try to nestle the stove as closely as possible into the alcove?

Option 2: Extend Hearth + Bigger Stove Build out the pad and go with something in the 2+ cu ft range. More heat, but will it just roast us out of the living room while the kitchen stays cold? How's heat distribution in colonial-era layouts with modern stoves?

The Constraints:

  • Non-cat only (family/friends will be using it)
  • Room above is just attic space. It's well insulated but I don't know how well the heat will move laterally out of the room into the kitchen on one side and the rest of the house on the other. (Floorplans attached.) (floor plans attached)
  • Don't have budget to rip out the existing mess - want to add a used wood stove for a few years before we do anything bigger.

Whats it worth? United States - Anyone seen these wood stoves before? From what research I’ve found they stopped making them in 1930. I’m trying to sell this for someone and need some help. Online research for this manufacturer is very limited.

Also, one of the pics is a closeup, you can see scratch’s, so I’m guessing it’s not blue enamel but maybe enamel paint? 🤷‍♀️

Is this gap ok?

Had the chimney sweeper come by and do his job. Now I noticed the pipe is flush on one side but has a visible gap on the other. Honestly can’t remember if it’s always looked like this or not.

I assume the pipes meet inside and it’s sealed, but I’m not sure if this is something to worry about.

Is this normal, or should I be calling them back to check it?

Is an insert worth it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I recently bought a house and I want to get an insert put into the existing fireplace. I’m concerned about the location of the stove and am wondering if the investment will be worth it. I’m thinking of going with either the Lopi NexGen Fyre Large or the Osburn 3500, if anyone has any experience with either, would be great to hear.

For details on the location, our fireplace is in our large living room with 15’ vaulted ceilings. The fireplace is facing an exterior wall, away from the rest of the house, which is a 2-story home. I have attached a floor plan.

Looking forward to hearing thoughts.

DuraVent

To my fellow store owners, how are you dealing with the price discrepancy between MAP and the big box stores?

Just got done quoting out essentially $8K worth of pipe (through the wall and up installation) for a customer based on MAP pricing.

However I can literally buy the pipe for probably half that through big box or stores like Northern Tool (who are apparently immune to DuraVent’s MAP policies???) And my discounted price to buy through my supplier’s is still more than the retail price through those big box stores/Northern Tool.

I can’t be the only one facing this issue. What are you all doing? Quoting below MAP and just buying from big box rather than your supplier?

Oily substance on the top of the wood stove

Hi everyone, any idea what this is, and if something I can burn off with a hot fire, wash off with soap? Or should a professional do this.

Background: this stove has not been lit in about a year. When I did light it, it smokes up the whole house. The oily substance only appears at the top of the stove.

General Wood Stove Question Just bought a house and this is on the property.. what can I do with it?

Post image

This barrel stove was left with the house we just bought. It's probably a good 100 feet from the house. We have around 1.5 acres of open property.

It looks like the previous owner was burning some fallen timber in the stove, but I was curious as to what else people do with these.

Thanks!

Re-seal job on a Vermont casting

Hello all. I’ve got a 25-30 yr old Vermont casting stove that is infrequently used. Now it’s not used at all because turning down the airflow doesn’t restrict the burning/temps. The door gasket looks to be in good shape, so I believe it is internal seals somewhere. How big of a job is it to re-do these? And might there be any how-to’s or YouTube videos that would be a good resource?

Thanks for any help.

1980s Avalon AVH1000 - Hearth Pad Help

Hi all,

We're currently remodeling a house and are trying to figure out what to do for a hearth pad under our Avalon AVH1000 wood stove. It was discontinued and I can't find much information about it online (and the sticker with all the specs is pretty much unreadable).

Originally, the stove was set on tile that was directly on the plywood subfloor without any metal heat shield or concrete backer board and without being built up on a raised hearth.

We are replacing the old flooring (carpet and the tile mentioned above) with Duravana Hybrid Resilient flooring throughout.

We would like to put a granite slab under the stove. Can this be put directly on the new flooring? Should we put it on the plywood subfloor instead? Do we need a metal heat shield and/or concrete backer underneath? Would it help to put the stove on a heat shield pan that sits on top of the granite? Feeling at a loss because there is so little info about this stove.

Thanks for any help.

I’m considering moving this to the other end of the house, and getting a bigger one here. What considerations should I think about? Recently bought a home with this stove in it. I love it but it looks small here.

Looking for some knowledge on a woodstove:)

I'm helping my mom estate sale the mountain of stuff she has no idea what to do with that was my recently departed step-dads. We have a brand new in plastic "Blaze King Torino 1605 natural gas vented gas fireplace heater". Manufactured in 2008. Have a stovepipe for it too I believe. Anyone know what something like that would be worth? Thanks!

Edit: Sorry, can't seem to edit title, but realized after saving it that I had called it a woodstove.

Advice on installing a chimney plz 🙏

So, my husband and I bought a new wood cook stove. We need to install a chimney for it. We watched a lot of YouTube videos and are pretty confident we can do it ourselves, we are quite handy. We went to a local hardware store and priced out the components for the chimney. It's pretty straightforward. Above the room is the attic, so just stove pipe in the living room, chimney straight up through the attic and the roof. Let's say the components at the hardware store were under $2k

We had a local installer company come in to give us a quote. Their quote was upwards of 8k for componants and labour. 5-6k for the chimney components alone. They will come back and do a Wett Certification if we end up doing it ourselves.

One thing that is sketching me out is that the fireproof pad they would install under the stove cost $850, meanwhile I can buy it at the manufacturer in the $400 range.

Can anyone give me an insight of the difference between the chimney components we would buy at say, Kent Building supplies vs what the professionals would install? What makes their product worth more than double? I understand the company has somewhat of a mark-up, but jeez...

I was hoping to spend part of our budget on hiring someone to take down a load bearing wall ( I have the quote for this and it's reasonable) I just didnt want to spend 8k on the chimney alone. Seems crazy to me.

General Wood Stove Question Help on hearth clearances, I think I know but feedback please

Picked up a Hearthstone Manchester 8361 (used for a year or two, I paid $1,000) and I think I have my clearances correct but want a solid answer for hearth size to make sure I minimize the hearth to keep as much floor space as possible.

In the images have taped areas, basically the same except front is longer in each option. I think I have to go with #2 but if anyone knows how I can reduce the hearth space and be in within specification I would really appreciate it - this all feels straight forward but there is that little piece of questioning in my mind when it comes to burning a stove.

I will be running the pipe out the top, straight through the roof.

I will be using double wall so looks like I can push it back 2" as long as I can fit the box correctly next to my beamed roof, I think how it have it is as far back as I can go based on the roof and beams I have to get around.

Thank you for any help you can give to get me running by fall.

Sites to track regional fuel prices, including firewood?

I know there are sites that track regional prices for gasoline, propane, etc… but I’m having trouble finding the same for firewood. Does such a thing exist?
