Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Work says it's inappropriate to talk about genocide

Upvotes

I live in England and work for a charity. They are good employers. But said I can't make a group to discuss Palestine and how to support her at work as it's inappropriate. They said people are allowed different views and we have to make sure it's a safe space for everyone.

I want to send a broad email saying there's a genocide happening but am worried about getting in trouble and being offending people. And they've been fantastic employers. But I also think the UN said it's genocide so we should say that.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Task delegation unfairness

Upvotes

A coworker from a different team is trying to push me and other coworkers in my team to do a task that is their responsibility.

I feel frustrated because the kind of work my team does is intense and we already have a lot on our plate, versus they have less workload on a daily basis. I would be willing to take up tasks only if they were my team’s responsibility and, two, if I had the mental space to do it. If I add this to my already overflowing work task lists, I would definitely get burnt out.

It’s not exactly that I don’t have time for it. It’s just the kind of tasks I have to do everyday are mentally draining and sometimes physically draining. Their workload isn’t nearly the same and I find it frustrating that they’re trying to push their tasks to us.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Is my supervisor being racist or she is just mean?

Upvotes

I work for a US company that has a service center based in Mexico. Our team has 6 members, of which 4 are non white (two Mexicans, me included and two asians based on the US). My supervisor is white, and our manager is latino.

To get to the point quickly, I, and my other coworkers have noticed we get treated very differently that our white counterparts. To provide some examples.

- If a mistake is made by me or my other non white coworkers, we get heavily called out, mostly in public (meetings through teams, or group chats) and in what I would classify as a condescending tone. If our white coworkers make a mistake, maybe even the same as another person makes she, I quote, calls it a "brain fart" or "an oopsie"

-She usually will give our activities to our white counterparts, without warning or heads up. Even when they haven't gotten trained in that specific task.

-Not race related, but she is a big fan of the word ret*rded, and uses it openly to describe people she doesn't like

There are other instances, like making comments of "not understanding because we have to translate everything in our heads" or "needing to speak slower so we can understand her better".
I want to clarify too, that this theory that she doesn't like "foreigners" has been brought up before by my asian coworkers, including one specifically saying "remember she only loves her white people"

I have brought this up to our manager, not as an official complain but as something I would like him to be observant of. He says he hasn't seen anything that might make him believe that, but he oversees many teams and interactions where both of them being included is rare.

She is pretty mean spirited and I am getting very tired. I feel bullied all the time, but I like the company and our manager is a pretty good guy. We really don't have HR in the company in general, and being remote makes it hard to have someone else to bring this up with. What do I do? Any advice?

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Labor Day Pay

Upvotes

Can anyone tell me exactly what my kid will earn if he works Labor Day?

He makes 24 an hour. So would it just be 1.5x his hourly rate?

So just 36 an hour?

Doesn't really seem fair as I'll get the day off and will earn 24 an hour to sit home?

So all he gains is 12 bucks an hour? So he's basically working for 12 bucks an hour as everyone else gets the 24 to stay home.

Am I missing something here?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts My mom’s supervisor wrote up a verbal warning for her being late but did not give it to her and had another employee falsify my mom’s signature

Upvotes

So recently the higher ups have been on the supervisor’s ass about giving warnings to people that are late. Yesterday my mom and sister who work at the same place were late. The supervisor didn’t really say anything to them but today she told my sister that she made a written warning for my mom and had another employee fake my mom’s signature and turned it in. The supervisor also went to talk to my mom and told her if one of the higher ups asks if she signed that to say yes. The supervisor says she did it because of the pressure they’re putting on her and didn’t want to get in trouble. Now my mom is going to tell the higher up what the supervisor did but she wants to know what else could be done? Will the supervisor be the only in trouble or can the company be held responsible and can she do anything against them? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Manager wants me to be all in, hasnt given me a contract or any info yet.

The job market is terrible and I found a job at a restauraunt that is soon to open. However the manager is running around like a crazed chicken trying to open this restauraunt and she hasn’t called/ texted or emailed me yet, even though I kept trying to check in with her . I found out there was a training day and she forgot to add me to the list, even though she’s already mailed all of us in the past. I need this job since I haven’t been employed in 2 years and I’m disabled but I don’t know how she will react when I need to take time off for my small business or for other life things. Her expectation for me to be “ all in” is unreasonable since she still hasn’t given me a contract or responded to any of my messages and it’s been 2 months . I feel replaceable because I’m disabled and also can’t drop everything to be there whenever .

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Lunch with a much older colleague?

I wasn't sure how to categorize this... an older man in his 50s works in a separate division from me (27f). We'd say hi to each other and have friendly conversation up until the time my office moved workspaces. Today, he visited us for the first time after a couple of months and we both found out we have the same educational background and he had worked a job I was previously really interested in. We both found out we had lived in the same foreign country before. He mentioned wanting to meet up with me for lunch to talk about our experiences and gave me his phone number but now I am hesitant if this is appropriate? I am in a relationship and he seems to be single, he doesnt give a threatening vibe at all, is this something I should follow through with?

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Being let go

My job fired me last week and asked me in an email to return my uniforms but to give them a 24 hours notice. I sent an email back on Monday that I can drop it off on Friday since that’s the only day I can. I’m scrambling to find a job in the meantime and have interviews line up. I’m told no manager is gonna be there and that I won’t be able to. I let them know that my I also needed my last check as well. Still they said no it cannot happen. I drive an hour to work every and there is a second office and hour and 20 min from the main office. Because I said I said I urgently needed my check and told them I would report them to the department of labor. The owner of the company and who’s wife’s writes my check, send me an email saying he sent my check to the other office not the one an hour from my house but the office 2hr 25 min from my house and that’s without traffic. The owners want me to meet him on the secondary office not the one I work out of which also happens to be 25 minutes from his house. I don’t know what to do.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Dead dog on the premise. TX

So on Monday when we came in we noticed a dead dog near the entrance. Someone called 311 to have it removed and today they called again since it was still there. They told us it was our responsibility to clean it up since it’s private property. We called the owner of the factory and she said it was our problem. Today a coworker and I had to go and physically remove it off the premises and toss it in a garbage can. A friend of mine said it was a biohazard and since I never got training for that since it’s a first is there anything I can do to maybe get a bonus or ask for more money? Maybe sue? I live in Texas.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts I think my manager's boss hates me.

We've only had maybe 5 conversations in the last 4 years, we work in different buildings , and she doesn't know what I do on a daily basis. When I do see her in the halls and say hi she ignores me, even when we're the only people in the hallway.

Last year I got written up for the first time, in April for:

• Leaving early, when the power was out following a massive storm, after staying for 3 hours in a humid loading dock, while my manager and her boss worked from home. I sent my boss a text that I was going to be leaving early, and an email, but didn't wait for approval.

•having "irregular" hours, AKA: time I made up for emergencies I communicated to my boss.

I got my shit together and for the last year I didn't get written up, then I got written up twice in a month for being tardy, and missing 1 punch while my manager was out, and couldn't help me.

The tardy was 6 minutes, I was in a car accident.

When I missed the punch my managers boss showed up at the door to my office fucking smiling asking me where I had been, it was like 1:30, I had just sat down for a moment while a vinyl plotter was finishing across the room. She didn't email, call, or message me, she showed up trying to catch me for ditching work, which I haven't done.

Then she closed the door to my 8x6 office(it's a storage closet with a desk) and lectured me about how it's a safety issue and I needed to get up and do actual work, I told her I was working. Then in the second write up she specified that I was not working when she finally "found me"(found me in MY office???)

I'm not gonna lie, it feels like she doesn't like me, when I spoke to my coworkers they agreed with me. hell my manager agreed with me, she told me she'd help me get a meeting with HR to discuss it, but man is it frustrating me rn.

Just had a 20 min frustration cry on my lunch in the parking lot because I don't want to get fired and now I'm on my third write up.

Over the last 338 work days, I've been more than ten minutes late 10 times, including excused Appointments.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation should i accumulate 3 points for this?

hello! so I was going to call off sick this morning due to an illness that led me to not showing up to school yesterday and now missing school today. I messaged my manager at 9AM (approx. 7 hours before my shift) and let her know I could not come in today and she told me it would result in a No Call No Show if I didn’t find someone to cover for me. I have attached our policy below.

——————————————————— Early Notice Tardy:

Leave Early: • Employee notifies the Team Leader as soon as possible and prior to the scheduled start time and employee is less than one(1) hour tarty arriving to work. (An employee is not considered tardy if clocking in within 5 minutes of scheduled start time.) Early Notice Absence: • Employee notifies the leader that they will be absent at least one (1) day prior to the scheduled start time. • Employee leave before the end of a scheduled shift and notifies the leader. It will not count as an incident if a leader requests an employee leave early. Note: If an employee walks off a shift without notifying the leader on duty, It will be considered job abandonment. 1 Point

Late Notice Tardy: • Employee notifies the team leader after the scheduled start time or • Employee is more than one (1) hour tardy arriving to work Late Notice Absence: • Employee notifies the leader they will be absent less than two (2) hours prior to the scheduled start time. 2 Points

No call / No show Absence • Employee fails to report for their scheduled shift and has not called-in within two (2) hours of the scheduled time. 3 Points

———————————————————

should i accumulate 3points although I contacted her 7 hours before my shift? if not, should I talk to my boss about this?? thank you for your help!

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Burnout at 4 years

Been working for said company for 4 years now. I’m a vendor/merchandiser, at first it was amazing. Boss is super cool with most things. Job was great but it started about 8 months ago the burnout feel… I have about 50ish or so stops which that alone will burn out anyone after a while, then inventory once a month and sometimes even picking up someone else’s. I was told I’m getting something else and I said I probably can’t do it because of XYZ that has to be done on Mondays, still was given it. I start as early as I can with being able to drop my kids off in the morning and fiance is gone before we even get halfway started. (She does the picking up of them)

Starting to slip away at a couple things here and there because of being go go go go. Slower I work longer my day is then I’ll be going home to get ready for bed and still have house things to do. Before this I was doing 5/6/7 days for my company in with and it was a vicious cycle that latest a year then thrown into this right after.

Anyone else getting burnt out? Kind of surprised I’ve lasted this long doing this. Not that I’m not working but I’m doing what I can in 8-10 hours everyday and going home even if not “finished” don’t get me started about time off because if I take a day off to do something we’re responsible for doing it anyways because there’s “nobody else” to do it.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Pay increase keeps decreasing

My job keeps decreasing my pay increase. When i first started working for them i got a 7% increase. The following year it dropped to 4%. Then this past year it dropped to 3%. My manager said they wanted to give give me a 2.9% increase but they had to fight to make it 3% which i feel is a load of BS. I was never put on no PIP or written up for anything. I was even praised by the customer for the work i was putting in. We have another raise coming in 2 months and i feel if they decrease it again i might snap!🤬 I'm a very chill and laid back person, but the thought of this company playing with my money especially considering the money im helping them make is putting evil thoughts in my head.

I really like this job even tho dealing with some of the people i deal with here can be challenging, but im only here for a paycheck, not make friends, gossip, or try to find love like alot of my co workers are doing. But for everything to keep going up in this country but the pennies their already giving me keeps decreasing is truly frustrating!

What would you recommend I do?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Quiet firing is back and here’s how to spot it

Well... it never really went away, but just a friendly PSA that quiet firing wasn't a fad and that it's still happening every day. It's good to keep your eye out for it and know that it can happen to anyone at any level. A new survey of 1,100+ business leaders found that 53% of companies are using or planning to use it this year.

HR and management experts agree that these are the main signs:

  • Your responsibilities shrink
  • You’re given busy work
  • You’re excluded from meetings
  • Feedback/reviews disappear

One interesting note from the interview was that not all quiet firing is malicious. One of the reasons it happens is that some managers lack the ability to have earnest conversations with their employees, and it's easier to just pull back on their growth and contributions. Regardless of why it's happening, it’s a reminder to stay alert and be ready to protect yourself.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Yesterday at work, a customer called the cleaning robot a “clanker” and I told them not to call it that and that it had feelings.

I work at a grocery store. Technically I was in the right because they literally were getting in the way of the robot doing its job, like recording and standing in its way. It’s not a toy, it’s worth 3 grand.

Our manager writes down a report and tasks for each person, the cleaning robot is included in this.

They didnt think I was serious until they saw that I was they told me they “I don’t think it does” when I said it had feelings. After that I told them to stand clear of the robot, and not to mess with it (our managers make us say this to people who try and play or bother the robot).

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts radio in the bathroom at my work

so yesterday, someone put a radio in the upstairs women’s bathroom where i work at company of 300 employees. the upstairs work area is smallish compared to the rest of the facility so there’s 1 men’s and 1 women’s room up here. I have a good guess on who brought the radio because one co worker of mine plays music from her phone at her desk just loud enough for her to hear or if you’re walking by. no one complains about it and lets her do her thing. she really likes Disco and 80s hits. I will say for context i’m one of the younger people that work for this company. I’m 24 and most of my colleagues are over 50. The radio in the bathroom is playing 80s hits, the news, and commercials like any station in the car. that’s why i think it’s the same lady and apparently she needs her ears filled with music at all times and won’t give others a break even in the bathroom. I find this irritating because this was a peaceful and mostly silent bathroom before. it also feels like i’m using a Walmart or mall bathroom where they have a station playing on the loud speakers. I don’t understand why anyone would add this in a shared private space. i can see how someone would “need” music in order to relax and go.. but making everyone else listen to your favorite station when they use the restroom really rubs me the wrong way. who gets to decide that a bathroom that previously for years didn’t have music, gets to all of the sudden have music? I have taken this up with HR but the manager isn’t here today so i will have to wait for her to determine if it’s a problem, unless she is the one who provided this new “solution” or development which is that there is now a voting paper and a pen next to the radio in the women’s bathroom so us girls upstairs can tally if we like it, don’t like it, or don’t care. I obviously voted that i didn’t like it. but now the score is 6 for, 2 opposed and i don’t know what to do. I feel outnumbered by older women who enjoy 80s hits saying it’s a great idea to keep it around while we do our business. It’s not even a juke box situation, i mean, whoever owns the radio gets to pick the station, right? but if not, is this everyone’s radio now? could i change it to something that’s relaxing to me when im in there? no other bathroom in the building has a radio. i guess i can go to the women’s downstairs every time i need to use the restroom to solve this problem.. but it frustrates me that this issue was created in the first place. would anyone else be bothered by this or am i crazy?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Quit job, Employer says they will deduct 180$ from my final pay check

I recently quit my job about two weeks ago without notice, I was inquiring about my final pay check to my former boss. She said she had a written check and to pick it up anytime and if I could return all items including shirts and tools. I informed her I had the uniforms but do not have any tools.

She went on how a saw was missing from the work vehicle. I do not have this said saw on god and on my life and did not steal their saw like she's insinuating. She says in quote

Boss:"if you're unable to return the saw, I will have to deduct it from your final pay check. I have a form for you to sign and I won't be back into the shop until tomorrow so you could pick up the adjusted check then"

I then replied " lol im probably not signing anything. I can probably meet you half way with the saw I do not have nor took, out of good faith'

They have not replied and I have researched a very little bit about Florida department of labor but not allot. If she does not accept my good faith that I shouldn't have even offered I guess I will give them a call? This isn't legal right?

I believe what she wants me to sign is that im giving her permission to deduct my pay which im not signing anything regardless.

They have always been sortive slimy and I can see them trying to play hard ball. Any advice or suggestions?

edit: I was given an extra saw from another colleague because my saw was rusted and would power on and off while doing a larger plumbing job, so he had met me on job site and given me his and he was supposed to get a new saw and I take his old one.

A few weeks later a job had popped up involving removing an old heater, when disposing of the heater from the van the manager helped remove things from the van to get out the heater because they are heavy. The manager took out the box that I believe had the saw in it and it was left outside the shop all day and night long.

A the next day while at another job I had only my rusted saw that didn't work well and asked my manager if he may have had it around the shop when we moved the heater out. He couldn't find it and suggested it was stolen because the crate he took out the van was left outside for an entire day. It was never brought up again til I quit.

When the owner asked about the saw I explained the heater situation to them and decided not to say "the manager grabbed it when moving the heater" because he shouldn't be blamed either and its not right to throw him under the bus for removing a box I BELIEVE had it. Maybe I misplaced it? But I didn't steal it.

Only reason I offered to pay half was because I felt bad about not putting in my two week notice and just leaving, thats the only reason.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Struggling with criticism and shame in my workplace. Help needed!

Hey all, I'm in my first job since the last 2 years but recently I have been transferred to another team in my workplace. The previous team wasn't high pressure at all and it was easy to work there. I also used to actively participate in all the meetings, used to share my opinions and ask questions.

Now in the new team I have been struggling in many ways since the start -- I never knew the work flow of the team and struggled a lot, my tech stack (it's a tech job) was totally new, the work was high pressure and tough. More than anything else, it's an environment where you have to figure out everything on your own and where people are quick to jump to judgments based on what questions you ask or help you seek.

I have been catching up more and more with time and now with pride I started to deliver more and more work, all on time, and be prepared for everything. Initially it was tough and what hurt the most was the bitter criticism delivered always in a condescending manner.

Now that I have filled most of the gaps I needed to fill in my work, there are still a few things remaining that I miss out on. For example, a couple of days ago a colleague was being mad at me because I had missed out on a crucial step where I needed to contact him. In truth, It had never been communicated to me that who takes care of that particular step and whom to reach out. So it became a missed thing among the process of the team I've been trying to figure out.

But the most painful thing happened today. Me and a few newcomers to the team couldn't ask much questions and participate in an important meeting where something important on which we are working on was being discussed.

When I was asked the reason why I am not participating, I told my boss that I've always struggled with the current topic of the meeting and trying my best to understand. I even asked if there's any documentation I can go through to catch up on it. He directed me to it but said that all these documents have been shared on, and talked about in our Official Chat groups. He said that I am asking about all of these things later, which is a really shameful thing. I told him that I understand the gaps and will fix them. He said they should've already been fixed.

In all truth, I am still relatively new to the team and when people talk on the chat group I don't get the context and feel that I will take time. But this blunt and painful criticism is having a toll on my mental health and I don't know what to do about it.

I don't understand why am I leaving out these gaps, or don't know if my team is just too harsh and judgemental. To be honest I have always worked on myself and my emotional intelligence so idk why am I falling short in this situation. Any advice/feedback for this situation? Would be very helpful

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Co-worked makes meetings go over for nothing

EDIT: title misspelled, should be ‘co-worker’

Hey, guys. I work for company, in the tech division. I used to work in office but since Covid I have been working remote as it’s handier and my local office closed and my nearest office is a 90 minute drive.

On to the issue. I am part of a large team in my department but work in a smaller team with 2 other people; Lizzy and Katherine (fake names). This issue is with Lizzy. My role has me going to more meetings than my role before, only like 3 or 4 a week but still. I don’t mind the meetings but Lizzy makes them unbearable. She’s a “I have one more question” type person and asks about 16 more questions. I don’t know if anyone else is annoyed by it but I really am. I just want to attend the meeting, talk through the topic at hand and get back to doing my work but no, Lizzy makes the meeting last longer than it needs to about nonsense, somethings stuff that has nothing to do with the topic or work in general.

For example; once we had a meeting that was scheduled to last 30 minutes. It lasted 90 minutes due to her ramblings. We got through the topic in about 25 minutes, and she decided to talk non stop about her cats health issues, kept walking away from the meeting to converse with her cats (and I’m not exaggerating, she speaks to her cats like they are people who will reply to her) and doesn’t mute herself for this. When her cat died she sobbed during a 15 minute meeting, making it last 45 minutes. She asks us to attend random unscheduled meetings for a simple problem she could have emailed us about and makes it go way longer than it should.

I spoke to my previous manager about this who agreed it was an issue and a waste of time, I don’t know if she spoke to Lizzy about it but this behaviour stopped for a while after. We got a new manager a few weeks ago and she’s started doing this again. It’s a pain and honestly making me hate my job.

I’m sorry if I come off as bitter here. I don’t mind a bit of friendly banter or small talk but I don’t want to have to sit on a meeting that was supposed to be about stats but turns into her talking about her cats not taking their medicine. No one else in my team does this, everyone else hates meetings but for some reason no one says anything. I’m unsure what I should do or how to approach this.

Should I talk to my new manager? Should I talk to Lizzy herself? I don’t want to create a hostile work environment but this is just a lot.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Manager not speaking to me

I work for a small tech company that did layoffs the first quarter of the year. My old manager was laid off as part of the restructuring. I inherited a new manager that I don’t like. I’ve been trying to be cordial with him, but honestly I’m checked out and wish they would have laid me off with a package.

I sent my mgr an email calling off yesterday due to a family emergency. He never responded to the email nor did he tell my team (I’m a lead) that I would be out of office. I’m back in office today and he still hasn’t said anything to me. Maybe I’m overthinking things. I’m used to having a good relationship with mgmt. Not really asking for advice here. Just venting. I don’t know how to navigate this relationship.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Doesnt waiting to report a late paycheck benefit me?

I have a paycheck that is overdue, I work for a fairly large corpo and have no sympathy for them. (Im paid minimum wage to work many positions there as a flex job).

If i didn't report the late paycheck, and waited until 30 days for the maximum late fees to build up, and then decided to report it. Wouldn't this be the most beneficial thing for me to do? I have savings to survive without the missing check.

Is there any reason I should report it now and be paid less? It is their responsibility to keep track of payment.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts How to phrase email receipt

I have no idea if this is the best place for this but here goes.

My job is essentially I am a switchboard. I monitor the team inbox, and then forward messages to the correct person/subteam. I then have to acknowledge receipt that I have forwarded the email and that the person I sent it to will get back to them with more information. I am not supposed to really give away who I sent it to because the whole point of my job is helping the team not get spammed with BS because some emails we get I can handle myself/it is actually my own job duty to handle. Also it's to help lower ranking people on the team avoid the wrath of some people, and I can just immediately escalate the issue to the higher ups.

When I was onboarded, I was told/suggested to respond "I have forwarded your email to the appropriate person, and they will contact you regarding same."

This seems to confuse some people who think they should have emailed someone else instead of our inbox. I respond back that, no, this is the correct email, but if I could avoid confusing people that would be great. Problem is I have no idea how else to say "I forwarded it".

Any suggestions? Or is what I was told to send the best way to do so already?
