When in doubt, unstable molecules

I think you just proved why Reed Richards is the smartest man of all time. He made combat swimsuits feasible when he set out to fulfill his best friend Ben’s dream of fighting Hulk in his undies.

u/AbbreviationsKey8163 Apr 28 '25

Also Janet Van Dyne, she had a Sense of fashion and Even designed costumes for other héroes like Ms Marvel (which btw, had her suit Made With unstable molécules).

Am I the only one who misses Carol’s old costume?

29

u/daedalus25 Apr 29 '25

To this day I'm still surprised that Marvel pushed so hard with Carol as "Captain" Marvel. They took a top 20 selling book (the 2006 series) and turned it into something that could barely stay in the top 100 - relaunching it several times, just to have it fail several times until enough time had gone by that people started forgetting how much better Carol as Ms. Marvel was.

20

u/Ironcrown_ Apr 29 '25

I really liked her when she was traveling with the Starjammers and she became Binary.

13

u/MedBayMan2 Wolverine Apr 29 '25

Still pisses me off. They wanted their own version of Wonder Woman, but they absolutely did not need to ruin her design and change her character like that. She used to be iconic, but now she is just… bland

7

u/Pagannerd Apr 29 '25

Co-signed! Brian Reed's Ms Marvel was fascinatingly fucked in the head and I love her so much.

5

u/MedBayMan2 Wolverine Apr 29 '25

Yeap. That one was perfect. Everything about the new Carol is so sanitised that I don’t even recognise her anymore.

I miss everything about old Carol. Her as Captain Marvel is either boring or flat out aggravating. As much as I like Kamala Khan, I also real wish we got the interesting and fun Ms. Marvel Carol back

It's probably not meant to be.

Back when he was the owner of Marvel, Perelman noticed that Miller's Daredevil was their best seller, took a quick look at the comic, concluded the reason why it was a great seller was Elektra, and ordered everyone to start adding sexy white ninjas to their comics.

Any resemblance between Perelman and Mojo is entirely 100% intentional:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Perelman

So, at least according to the story, Betsy's outfit is meant to look ridiculous.

167

u/AegisGram Apr 28 '25

Ok you get an upvote purely for the Moio comment.

23

u/ngl_prettybad Apr 28 '25

That sounds like the name Id come up with when I forget "Ron pearlman"

58

u/bskell Apr 28 '25

Not true.. perelman didn't show up till 89 and mojo showed up in longshot that happened in 85

39

u/dagujgthfe Apr 29 '25

Duck was obviously joking, but I don’t think that that means post ‘89 mojos couldn’t be designed to look like Perelman. How many Patrick Steward prof X’s do we have?

2

u/bskell Apr 29 '25

Seriously? We are spoiled for choice now with fat bald guys. Perelman didn't care about Marvel in 85 as he was busy doing Revlon or some other company at the time. It was around 4-5 years later that he picked up Marvel. Mojo is obviously based upon Hollywood types that didn't care about artistic things and couldn't stop picking or changing things.. a trope that is a trope because it's real and still happens. It also happens that Perelman and a lot of other money people also have the same look.. It's amusing but not true.

7

u/DementedJ23 Apr 29 '25

but jim lee's mojo is exactly that face, and his tenure was 89-91 on the book.

u/Sherm Cyclops Apr 28 '25

and ordered everyone to start adding sexy white ninjas to their comics.

Yeah, we wish this was a white ninja. It'd be somehow less offensive.

4

u/CaptainMal517 Apr 29 '25

How's it offensive?

16

u/Sherm Cyclops Apr 29 '25

They skipped "cultural appropriation" and went straight to "literal body appropriation," then had Kwannon reassert herself via the "hypersexual and promiscuous Asian" stereotype, then killed her of mutant AIDS without any attempt to give her actual characterization. It was decades before they fixed it. Just going with "Betsy's a ninja now" would at least have sidestepped all that.

8

u/crono09 Apr 29 '25

The real story behind it is a lot more complicated. Kwannon wasn't supposed to exist at all. It was a perfect storm of so many things going wrong at the same time. Sir Superhero has a whole video about it.

Basically, the whole "Psylocke becomes Asian" thing happened while Chris Claremont was writing X-Men. Claremont is really into characters getting their bodies altered in various ways, but the alterations are rarely permanent. In one story arc, a villain captures Betsy Braddock (codename Psylocke) and transforms her body into an Asian body. It was supposed to go back to her normal body soon in a future issue.

...Except that Chris Claremont suddenly got fired in the middle of that arc. It happened quickly, and he didn't get to discuss his plans with the rest of the writing team. He was replaced by Fabian Nicieza, who was not familiar with X-Men at the time and only got a quick summary of what had recently been going on with it. He mistakenly thought that Braddock's transformation was a body swap, so he created Kwannon (codename Revanche) as the Asian character that Braddock swapped with.

Of course, Marvel could simply swap them back, but this was in the early 1990s when the X-Men experienced a surge in popularity. Betsy Braddock as the Asian Psylocke was especially popular, and most newcomers to the X-Men didn't know about the accidental body swap. (Remember, most people didn't have easy internet access at the time, so if you weren't keeping up with the comics, you didn't know these characters' histories.) Turning their most popular Asian character white would have looked extremely questionable, so Marvel decided just to pretend that she was Asian.

By the time the 2000s came around, most fans were aware of Psylocke's body swap history, but she was still a popular X-Men character, so Marvel was reluctant to change the status quo. In 2018, Marvel finally saw an opportunity to correct this mess-up and restore both characters back to their original bodies. Now, Betsy Braddock is back to being Captain Britain, and Kwannon is the new Psylocke.

2

u/Eternal1Bug May 02 '25

This is an excellent summary. Thank you

5

u/Deinosoar Apr 29 '25

Yeah, she could literally have just uploaded ninja skills from Kwannon using her established psychic powers. Easy peasy and a lot more clean.

2

u/CaptainMal517 Apr 29 '25

I mean I just don't think it's that deep. "Every problem looks like a nail when you're a hammer" type thinking. It's only offensive if you want it to be.

6

u/tombuazit Apr 29 '25

White British lady steals the body of a young Asian woman and uses it for decades to ensure fetishests keep buying her comics..... Ya nothing offensive there right...

3

It helps that Betsy's outfit is that of a master Hand assassin, same as Elekta.

2

u/Ducklinsenmayer Apr 29 '25

Very practical people, those master hand assasins. Nothing deadlier than a butt wedgie.

3

u/Kazewatch Apr 29 '25

Huh, sounds like Elektra was his fetish and he wanted to up the ante.

2

u/Ducklinsenmayer Apr 29 '25

He was running a giant stock scam at the time- tricking investors into buying into a new company, with the idea they would make Marvel a huge media juggernaut, and sell tons of toys to oversexed 15 year old boys.

He netted a cool 2-300 million with it, but drove Marvel into bankruptcy.

The irony?

He was right- with some real backing Marvel did become a billion dollar media juggernaut.

Just years later, first with Sony, then Fox, then Disney.

Imagine if they had started making big budget films for real back then...

Its not and its not supposed to be, its a female comic character's costume so sex appeal is what matters over practicality. People will say its for ease of movement but male heroes like spiderman seem to have no issues with range of movement in full cover body suits. The artist wanted to draw a sexy ninja and so he gave her what is essentially a vacuum sealed 80s style bathing suit. Irl this would be a wedgie nightmare and all her flying kicks would cause wardrobe malfunctions, but in the comic world she just looks like a supermodel ninja who doesn't have to worry about that stuff🤷‍♀️

73

u/SpaceShipwreck Apr 28 '25

Basically what happened to Olivia Munn "Day One" in the Psylocke costume?

79

u/himsoforreal Apr 28 '25

"wearing skin-tight latex does have its challenges. “Now it fits like a glove, but it’s kind of hard because there’s been times where I’m pulling and it pops like a balloon, which did happen day one,” admits Munn. “Day one, I was like, ‘Uh, guys, uh, do we have a backup? Sorry I popped my crotch.”

4

u/IncompleteAnalogy Apr 29 '25

IIRC, she also complained at one point about needing to he significantly lubed up to fit into it ... it was a lot of hard work .

All superheroes look like models and I imagine another of them would have their costume ripped from movement with how tight thay are guy or girl (hulk for example). Although we do need more fanservice of the guy characters.

23

u/KaleRylan2021 Apr 28 '25

There's more male fanservice than people seem to admit, I mean look at the new swimsuit special or any mcu film.

15

u/beckersonOwO_7 Apr 29 '25

Not enough.

12

u/KaleRylan2021 Apr 29 '25 edited Apr 29 '25

I mean, it's attractive men shown in skin tight clothing or very little clothing regularly, what more do you want?

I think people like to say things like 'needs more male fanservice,' but there's very little understanding of what that actually entails. Comics aren't porn, the women aren't actually shown in particularly less clothing than the men half the time, barring a few costumes, but then you've got the namors of the world wearing less than anyone, so even that's questionable, plus 80% of the males and the females are in painted on outfits anyway.

Even the above picture of Psylocke, really the only thing that's inherently more provocative than a similarly drawn male of the time you could say is the tilt of the hips. Other than it's a pretty usual power pose, fist raised and weapon in hand, angry expression on her face.

The long and short of my point is that people's reactions to this sort of thing has a lot more to do with how people view women than how women are presented.

6

u/MP-Lily Kid Omega Apr 29 '25

Exactly. It’s all in the poses. Male characters need to be drawn so that their ass is always the focus no matter how they’re positioned, anatomy be damned. You really don’t see that with anyone other than Spider-Man and Nightwing, but it’s pretty standard for female characters.

16

u/beckersonOwO_7 Apr 29 '25

Revealing and sexy aren't the same thing for men and women. I want all genders sexed up equally. Make everyone dress like Emma Frost.

3

u/KaleRylan2021 Apr 29 '25

Okay, you're either trolling or being weird, so you do you.

u/JinFuu Apr 28 '25

Definitely, that's currently 'safe horny', or at least the type of fanservice/horny that it's okay for people to admit they like, lol.

Like the Hades games!

5

u/Xygnux Apr 29 '25

This. I never understood how Emma Frost's costume ever managed to stay on. Not that I don't appreciate it as a guy, but how does her boobs not fall out of the costume in this:

https://ultimatekeyissuecomics.ca/products/new-x-men-116-marvel-2001-vf-emma-frost-joins-x-men-newsstand

4

u/AoO2ImpTrip Apr 29 '25

I choose to believe Emma has never actually worn one of those outfits before and is going into combat in regular clothes but projecting the mental image of what she's thought to wear.

It's almost certainly not true, but we've seen her do it before.

“but male heroes like spiderman seem to have no issues with range of movement in full cover bodysuits“

Female characters like Spider-Woman/Spider-Girl/Ghost-Spider, etc. exist and all wear full body suits by the way. People still complain about sex appeal regardless.
Never mind Spider-Man wearing exactly the same tight suit that shows every curve in awkward positions.

At the end of the day these are drawings and it’s about cool or attractive designs that catch the reader's eye. And yes, comic readers enjoy sexy characters I'm not arguing that.

30

u/angelic-beast Magik Apr 28 '25

I think the argument I see more often is less about the full body suits and more about how often female heroes have the bodies of models and males have the bodies of bodybuilders. One appeals to the male gaze and the other the male power fantasy. When polled women often rate less built guys as more attractive, and many like men that carry more weight or have feminine traits. Its like the mandate to artists is to draw the ideal men and women from the perspective of the "average male comic reader."

I personally don't think comics need to be less sexy (although there is a time and a place and sometimes for dramatic sense sometimes they should tone it down a bit lol) but they could be a lot more sexy if they pandered to the female gaze more, which is something that I think Manga does better than western comics.

4

u/Wrong_Bobcat Apr 29 '25

Aren't there studies that show women also vastly prefer the sexy female character designs that keep getting criticized for being made for the male gaze? I know there was one not too long ago in regards to game characters but I imagine its the same for most mediums.

2

u/angelic-beast Magik Apr 29 '25

My point was more that the guys aren't for the female gaze. I'm not criticizing the existence of hot women but bringing up that the sexyness is not equally distributed.

He was at his worst (or best, you decide) during his tenure with the XMen. I don't think he has ever drawn one of the female characters not looking like a geneticamente enchanted supermodel

16

u/apatheticviews Apr 28 '25

As a matter of fact, she makes fun of the supermodel thing a couple times

u/schoolisuncool Apr 28 '25

And that’s why Jim Lee is the most popular X-men artist

14

u/myowngalactus Rictor Apr 28 '25

He’s the most recognizable x-men artist, if not the most popular, probably in large part due to them using his designs for the animated series. I personally wouldn’t even put him in the top 5, and while I think he’s a good artist, I dislike a lot of his redesigns of character costumes.

3

u/Difficult-Cap-3410 Apr 28 '25

How would u design this character?

18

u/gar1848 Apr 28 '25

Ah, Marvel has already done that by adding pants. Also reworking the backstory because "white woman in asian body playing the Sexy ninja" aged poorly

Jokes aside, I don't think it was a problem of costume. Just that Jim Lee really love to focus on the sexy parts. Nothing wromg with that but after awhile it gets rididicolous

I mean people enjoy wearing 1 piece bathing suits. This isn't different.

3

u/NeoSailorMoon Apr 28 '25

As a person who has worn a one-piece bathing suit because society thinks all girls want to wear that shit, thus didn't have other swimming options, your defense doesn't negate the OP's assumption. They're uncomfortable, regardless if people like to wear them. Wedgies are guaranteed and inevitable, they always require adjustment, it feels suffocating and claustrophobic because it sticks to your skin, and you're exposing your bits to people who don't deserve to see them, but as a little girl, you don't assume you have other options or choice because the racks don't say so, and everybody is wearing one.

I just checked my local Walmart's options for girls. There are still no one-pieces with shorts, and all options are skin tight. You have to buy shorts separately.

I'm skeptical if anyone actually enjoys wearing them. I think they enjoy the result of them (attention, swimming), but not the actual act of wearing them.

5

u/HoraceGrantGlasses Apr 29 '25

Is a two piece more comfortable? If not, what's the alternative, scuba suit?

9

u/NeoSailorMoon Apr 29 '25

Certain types of bikinis are more comfortable, but still have some discomfort. I dunno why they don't offer cute girly swim trunks and tops like they do for boys. Not all girls want to be naked via the illusion of being "clothed."

4

u/MP-Lily Kid Omega Apr 29 '25

You can find womens’ swim shorts and tops far more readily online. I have a few old ones somewhere in the depths of my closet, I can check the brands if you want any recommendations.

Yeah people claiming they're uncomfortable are just making stuff up. Leotards like this used to not only be common but fashionable.

3

u/SadLaser Apr 29 '25

If the actors/actresses from the MCU are to be believed, outfits like these are more comfortable than the ones characters like Thor have to wear. They had to build an air conditioner into the Thor breastplate because it was so hot and uncomfortable, it could be harmful. Even much lighter outfits like Black Widow's cat suit apparently is a nightmare. Whether they're bulky armor, full body suits or bathing suit onesies like this, they're all pretty awful to wear. You just have to suspend your disbelief and accept it. Or make up some headcanon like they're made of such special material that they're somehow super comfortable beyond what we could imagine technologically speaking. Or.. magic.

3

u/Axon14 Apr 29 '25

I would be disarmed immediately if I saw her wearing that. It’s about utility

3

u/RealAmandaMcKnight Apr 29 '25

I don't think any of the 90s fits would be comfy. Lol but they sure are iconic. 🫡

6

u/JDL1981 Apr 28 '25

Is this a serious question?

5

u/Thedeadlypocketbrush Apr 28 '25

It's a comic book character, jackass.

Ask a gymnast?

2

u/MP-Lily Kid Omega Apr 29 '25

I used to do gymnastics, I’ve worn leotards before, they’re fairly comfortable… if you don’t have sensory issues like I do.

5

u/Grahstache Apr 28 '25

Thats the neat part, its not

3

u/Zodconvoy Cyclops Apr 28 '25

It's not like it was her ass hanging out. It was someone else's. That's probably amazingly freeing.

9

u/Manwth4ballscantwalk Apr 28 '25

It probably isn’t, but as I’ve heard women say, “high heels are uncomfortable but make my ass look fantastic”

Unlimited wedgie

Unstable Molecules

2

u/InsaneHowlCowl Apr 28 '25

As I get older I see these battle swimsuits as wedgy prone more than sexy

I can’t recall what comic I was reading recently but I caught myself saying “seems uncomfortable.”

Fwiw the original version of this (by my recollection) was literally the undergarment to a suit of armor that was the Lady Mandarin suit.

Side note: that armor was a really cool design and the concept of Lady Mandarin deserved more than an issue or two before being abandoned, IMO.

I know they were in a hurry to make an excuse to have the X-Men’s own Thong Ninja / writer’s barely hidden fetish, but I wouldn’t have minded if that story had had a bit more time to breathe.

2

u/VIRTUA_BOY Apr 28 '25

Well.. it looks like it lets her coochie breathe.. lol

2

u/ubiquitous-joe Apr 28 '25

Obviously the main draw is male gaze and sex appeal. However, as ballet dancers wear leotards, so too was the idea here partly about something that would allow flexible acrobatic movement for a ninja, which Psylocke’s cloak and armor would not. That’s the excuse anyway.

Deep dark secret: It's likely MORE comfortable than a lot of the skin tight bodysuits other superheroes wear, if only because there's less of the impossibly tight material covering your body and it's easier to get on and off.

2

u/Dunge0nMast0r ForgetMeNot Apr 29 '25

Comfort is always number 1 on the designer's mind.

2

u/ericrobertshair Apr 29 '25

It's Canon in Marvel that telepathy is easier against someone thinking about sex, so Betsy dressed like that to make the focussed totality of her psychic powers even more totalitally focussed.

2

u/UltimateStrenergy Apr 29 '25

It's not comfortable to wear. Back when movie super hero costumes weren't mostly CG, actors would regularly complain about how uncomfortable they were.

Notice how Thor isn't wearing his iconic helmet? That's exactly why.

2

u/BeeTeaEffOhh Apr 29 '25

Uh, it's a comicbook. It looks cool.

There's no reason for most superhero characters to wear the ridiculous costumes they do. They're drawn that way because they look cool in the comic format. It's like asking why Superman wears red undies on the outside of his suit. There is no "reason" the reason is that it makes the design look better. Without it, it just looks, off.

The real question is real life. Why are female gymnasts or track stars pressured to wear barely more than bikini underwear while their male counterparts seem perfectly capable wearing full on pants or shorts...curious.

2

u/ImMadeOfClay Apr 29 '25

I'm wearing it right now. Definitely not made for a dude. But I'm making it work.

2

u/Fantasy_Line Apr 29 '25

I mean it is just a leotard. Ballet dancers and gymnasts wear them all the time. Plus it’s fiction. Practically rarely matters.

2

u/reapersritehand Apr 29 '25

Everyone saying it's not are mostly right, but i say you're asking the wrong group go over to the gymnastics sub and ask them

2

u/Porunga23 Apr 29 '25

It’s not, that’s why she’s making that face.

2

u/Hour_Entertainer_214 Apr 29 '25

Cause sex sells. As weird as it seems today back in the 80’s & 90’s female characters weren’t the attraction they are today so in order to help sell books they gave them skimpy clothes and their comics sold like gangbusters.

2

u/Atrocious1337 Apr 29 '25

It's based on the same sorts of outfits acrobats and gymnasts wear. The idea being to leave the hip and shoulder joints unobstructed to allow for easy of movement. It's likely also a spandex like material.

It's like how Superman's underwear on the outside is based on what old Circus Strongmen used to wear.

Being a Ninja isn’t about comfort.

Also the traditional kabuki look doesn’t allow the flexibility to show you chest and butt in the same photo. Priorities!

2

u/xicious Apr 28 '25

Only way to know is to try.

2

u/Bebesoft09 Apr 28 '25

Leotards are actually extremely comfortable to wear, hence why women wear them in gymnastics, but cute try tho.

Unstable molecules my ass 1 string shorter and her brood slips out 😂. I’m too much of a pragmatic thinker to enjoy it like ain’t no why she isnt breathless after putting every piece of that shit on.
