I maintain that making him the sex ed teacher, while it's played as a joke, makes perfect sense. The guy's seen and done it all, he's not an awkward or imposing parental figure, he answers questions honestly and doesn't sugarcoat anything, and he offers pretty much zero judgment when faced with embarrassing teenage questions. He also — as this demonstrates — is interested as much in the emotional and self-respecting stuff as the "slot A into tab B" mechanics.

This is a much better POV about it than I guarantee the writing team had when throwing that out there, because yes, it DOES make perfect sense…when you put it like this…but based on the way everyone treats him on panel, it’s clear that it WAS meant as a joke, cuz no one’s walking around just randomly gushing that Remy’s such a great guy who knows how to treat women and is a paragon of wisdom that the next generation of Mutant children are lucky to have at their disposal 😔

In all honesty, yeah, there’s gonna be someone better for basic tactics and field leadership…but what about when you find yourself off script and in the heat of the moment, and you need to freestyle in order to outwit your opponent and pull a “Kobayashi Maru” out of a no-win scenario via subterfuge and misdirection?

THAT’S the class Remy should have been teaching.

There’s fighting smart, there’s fighting dirty, there’s fighting to win…and then there’s winning without fighting at all because you were a sneaky MFer and your opponent had no idea what just happened.

I feel like that would be a VERY useful skill for young Mutants to have in the world they inhabit, just like learning self-defense, ethical application of their abilities, and training on how to use them and regulate their powers in any given situation…as well as math and history and science.

Oh I know, him being the sex ed teacher was totally played as a joke. It just inadvertently makes complete sense. Ditto art history, which ... let's be honest, he's also unironically good at, probably. And agreed that he does have a particular skill set that's useful to replicate. Ugh, this makes me almost want a "school" book to come back, or at least, for more classic-style teaching attention to be paid to the Outliers in Uncanny.

It would actually very easily make perfect sense for Remy and people trained through the Thieves Guild, period, to have fairly extensive knowledge of art history, or at the very least, have some expertise in specific areas. As a thief that stole a lot of rare artifacts and art, often for high paying and/or very dangerous clients, it'd be kind of a wrench for him if he couldn't, say, tell a real piece from a carefully crafted fake.

... I know, that's my point exactly. But it and the sex ed job are both treated like a gag or some nothingburger class for Remy to "teach," so he can justify being there or something. They're actually both subjects he's totally qualified to teach, but that isn't how it's presented and that's dumb.

I mean I'm agreeing with you? Sorry if that wasn't clear, I know it's Reddit. I hate so much that so many of the writers after a certain point just decided that Gambit being an impulsive wild card type of character meant that he was also dumber than a football bat.

Sorry, it's hard to tell when it's "agreeing with you" and not "parroting your own point back to you like you haven't already made it." The latter makes my eyeball twitch.

The school will be back at some point, and when it returns, there 100% needs to be a MASSIVE focus put on ACTUAL teaching (it would be similar to Avengers Academy and Wolverine and the X-Men), and having underutilized members of the roster that MAKE SENSE, be the teaching staff, with the focus being some of the kids, kind of like the older Academy X used to be.

The grown up members will have fun interactions, and then really cool solo moments when they get to showcase how awesome they are by themselves…but it needs to be like Wolverine in Whedon’s Astonishing run. Drip feed the audience the thing they wanna see, so when they FINALLY get it, they go nuts over it! But also, most of these characters have been at the school for years now, and are doing nothing else…so let them become faculty and teach the next generation some stuff! We’ve had “younger Mutants” since the original New Mutants line-up, and like, 4 “newer” classes of younger Mutants since…but very few of them have graduated to an X-team over the years. This would be a GREAT place to put many of them!

Gambit is such a good dad.

He was definitely giving cute dad/uncle energy in the current Gail Simone Uncanny series, especially the Remy-focused storyline with "The Vig." Loved how it ended with him instructing the Outliers how to properly eat crawfish and Rogue was like, "seeing you like this is really turning me on."

Huberto: What if she decides she's better off without you?

Gambit: Could happen. And it'll hurt. But if you really care about her, you want what's best for her. Even if it ain't you.

Gambit is talking from experience with what's happening with his love life with Rogue at that time. She refuses to be with him because of not being able to have physical contact and I might be wrong but I think she's in a relationship with Magneto at this moment because she can have physical contact with him which was her reasons on who she would have relationships with anyone because I think it's supposed to be during this time even though it was off print that she had a relationship with Sentry because his powers allowed her to touch him.

Naw Gambit and Rogue are married now. And she's able to touch people now and has been able to do so for over 5 years now.

I was talking about when this issue of Avengers Academy came out in 2013. The relationship status between Gambit and Rogue was off and I believe she was in a romance with Magneto, which I despised by the way.

Gambit and Rogue didn't get married until 5 years later in 2018. In X-Men Gold #30.

Actually, at the time of this storyline, she *was* able to touch Gambit but she still needed space from him. You are right that in these panels, he's alluding to their dynamic at the time. He respected that she needed to figure out what she wanted. Several years later, Kelly Thompson wrote an excellent Rogue & Gambit series that rehabilitates their relationship. Rogue explains that she chose to date Magneto because she was scared of her relationship with Gambit -- scared because he'd lied to her in the past, scared because of how inexperienced she was in comparison to him. She needed to explore her options and she wanted to have more experience. Not long after that series, they got married and have been happily married (just ignore the hideous Rogue & Gambit series by Stephanie Phillips) ever since.
