He already did a lot for Hope the last time he wrote X-Men. And then no one knew what to do with her, again. I do hope he streamlines and clarifies her whole "mutant messiah" thing in this run and leaves her in a good place where someone will actually run with it, because I love the character when he's writing her.

I think it should relate back to the Stabilizing and Optimizing aspects of her gift. Like helping mutants unlock potential and grow their gifts.

I was curious while reading the issue—what is the difference between her powers and Synch’s? I’m not familiar with Hope but you seem knowledgeable so maybe you can clarify for me.

Essentially she's a power manipulator. She can copy and use other people's powers, like Synch can, but she can also boost people's powers, or stabilize them, as she did for emerging mutants in Generation Hope. It's apparently Omega level, so we don't know the upper limits of her powers or what else she can do with them. She's the lynchpin in the resurrection protocols because she brings everyone else's powers to the level where they can pull it off. Additionally, she was raised by Cable to be a soldier so she's a powerhouse in combat.

We also don't fully know WHY she exists. They've never really dug into why or how she was born a mutant after M-Day, why her powers manifested at birth, or even who her parents were. She's a messiah in Cable's future and a destroyer in Bishop's. She also seems to have a connection to the Phoenix but it's unclear why. So hopefully Gillen will dig into it at some point, he wrote the Generation Hope series which is a fun read.

(My theory is that Sinister actually created her and she's the culmination of his Grey/Summers research but like I said, no answers yet)

Thanks. Fascinating. There’s such a huge chunk of stuff that I missed between the Lobdell era and HoX/PoX.

If you're interested in Hope, definitely read Messiah Complex and Second Coming (and the run of Cable in between if you really want to dig in, but it's skippable I think), that's her whole origin saga. Then Generation Hope is really excellent. Then she plays a big role in AvX, which is not a great book but has some big consequences. After that you pretty much skip to HoXPoX for important Hope stories.

Gillen pretty much defined her voice in Gen Hope so like I said it's great he has her back now. But she's been all over the place with other writers so I don't think everyone likes her as much as I do.

I really wish Gillen or Ewing did something with Stryfe. Duggan's Stryfe was really bad.
