Oh, man - so, our wedding photographer was a long-time friend of my partner's parents. As in, saw him all while he was growing up, and knew him as an adult.
She wanted to do the photography for our wedding as her gift to us, and we very gratefully said yes. Pictures turned out fine, though my favorite is honestly just a candid my mom took of my husband and I while we were seated together after the ceremony, where we're kissing.
About a week after the wedding she dropped off a CD and a thumbdrive containing all our photos with my in-laws, who called us up to let us know - along with teasing hints that she'd also left 'another gift' for us. When we showed up to visit and collect the items, they revealed what the gift was.
It was a big (like 20x30'), framed, caricature drawing of the two of us, where she'd turned his full beard into a van dyke, made him (chestnut hair, hazel eyes) dark-blond and blue-eyed, and me (dark, dark brown hair, almost black-brown eyes) corn-blond and gave me light brown eyes. You could just barely tell it was us otherwise.
They cracked up when they saw our reactions. They said they had no idea she had intended to gift us this, and had no clue where she pulled reference pictures from, what prompted her to make the caricature, or why she'd think we'd want it.
For extra context, I am an artist who did portraiture professionally for YEARS before moving in a different direction with my painting, something the photographer was very aware of. We were literally talking about my art, and she stopped to look at my website, during the reception.
When we came back over to visit the next time, they asked if we'd hung up the portrait. They were shocked when we said yes, then laughed when we explained that we'd flipped the picture over in the frame, and used the glass surface as a whiteboard.

This was a rollercoaster ride to read.
What a strange turn of events. Did you ever ask them why they made that odd extra gift? Or what the intention was?
2
u/HallowskulledHorror 12d ago
Nope! She is very much more my in-laws' friend than someone we actually know or interact with, so it just seemed like the least stressful option with the least potential for drama to simply move on. We mostly landed on the assumption that she really was just trying to make a nice gesture, in her own very strange way.

Friends of mine got married a couple of years ago and had a live painting done. It was absolutely atrocious. The know it's a monstrosity but still display it over their fireplace (they appreciate that their friends paid for it).
This one actually came out really well done.

I went to a wedding where the artist badly drew people on purpose, and it was advertised as such. It was a lot of fun. People would go sit at the artist's table and they'd chat with them while they sketched, and everyone got bad drawings as party favors. The same artist drew the bride and groom for the wedding invites.

Talented, skilled, developed. Any word you can think to explain how well they paint. That's what they are.
→ More replies (1)21
u/Erikatessen87 Jul 03 '25 edited Jul 04 '25
The problem with calling it "talent" is it ignores the years of practice someone puts into building their skill to the level it is by ascribing it to something they were born with and didn't need to work to achieve, while also discouraging novices who assume their lack of skill is simply because they weren't born "talented" and can never achieve the same level as someone who is.
You can keep prevaricating and insisting on continuing to use the word "talented," but it reads as dismissive and the very people you're trying to compliment are going to bristle at it.

u/mljb81 Jul 03 '25
Look up growth vs fixed mindset (and the definition of talent vs skill). Attributing success to talent isn't the compliment you think it is.
8
u/Adorable-Bike-9689 Jul 03 '25
I will look that up. It sounds like folks have different definitions of skill vs talent. I was just paying respect to their ability to accomplish something like that
I'll look that up now though

20
u/Sproose_Moose Jul 04 '25
Having the bachelor/bachelorette the night before the wedding is insane
3
u/illustriousbogwitch Jul 06 '25
It’s not super common to have the bachelor(ette) party the night before anymore. But you do have the rehearsal dinner the night before, and in my experience that often turns into another drunken party.
37
u/KingBee Jul 02 '25
I’ve never experienced somebody constantly swapping out my partially drank drink with a full one frequently except at my wedding. Often when I’m not looking. You get up to talk to somebody, turn around, and your half full drink is replaced with a new one. It’s still the only time in my life I had my own ‘attendants’ of sorts to do that (they were the venues employees/waitstaff).
If you normally pace your drinking based on the number you go through, you can see how this would quickly become problematic. I was unable to keep track and it didn’t take long to get drunker than planned, oops. Luckily it was a fun drunk not a messy drunk.
12
u/KittenInAMonster Jul 02 '25
I got pretty drunk at my friend's wedding because of this. I rarely ever drink and I was going to have maybe one or two. Took me a while to realize they kept topping me off when I wasn't around.

u/Other-Cantaloupe4765 Jul 02 '25
I work at a hotel, and we get tons of weddings there. Lemme tell ya… probably 80% of the weddings I’ve seen, the wedding party and guests are drunk before they even leave the hotel to go to the wedding. Then they drink all night and come back to the hotel, where they all hang out either in the lobby or on our patio drinking for a few more hours.
It’s crazy. Why are people getting trashed before they even leave.
74
u/echoohce1 Jul 02 '25
People have a drink the morning of to settle their nerves, some just over do it, often accidentally.
25
u/filthy_harold Jul 02 '25
That's why we had a brunch wedding. We had some of our friends help do decor setup and we didn't have a rehearsal so things had to go right on the first run. Our brunch reception had a tab limit so everyone was able to have a couple drinks. Later on, we had a larger dinner reception at a community center (extended friends and family) and then an after party (just the younger crowd) with a bunch of activities at a bar, both with plenty of free drinks. There was plenty of opportunity to get smashed on our wedding day, just please not during the expensive part. I would have been pissed if I caught someone throwing up a very nice piece of Chilean sea bass.

u/MyTagforHalo2 Jul 03 '25
Not gonna lie, when it comes to ridiculous charges for weddings, I think I would rather pay an artist for one of these, then the vast majority of the rest of the services.

My guess is she checked out the location ahead of time. And then outlined and base painted the church in prep. I bet she also has the couple pre-painted as well given the more generic body shapes. All she has to do after that is add their faces and make small corrections during the wedding. Thats why the brides body doesn’t really look like her.
3
u/orchidguy Jul 04 '25
Isn’t that the inside of the Sagrada Familia? So maybe not even the church they got married at.
→ More replies (1)3
u/fwouewei Jul 06 '25
On the other hand, it should be pretty obvious that as a painter, you paint people and their bodies a little more... favourably on their wedding day.
But I do agree, there's almost certainly a lot of prep and pre-done work involved. The artist didn't just sit down on the day of the wedding and painted this in 2 hours.

Gorgeous! But like. Where do you hang it?? I still feel weird putting up photos of myself and my husband in our house. But that’s just me!
22
u/colnross Jul 02 '25
I get what you're saying, but that is where you're meant to hang it... It doesn't make sense now, but in 20 years when the memory is more faint and you both look a little less like the painting, I think it will have a bit more meaning behind it.
2
u/HerPetteSaysRoar Jul 02 '25
I’m sure you’re right, not trying to be negative. That was just my first thought. I love that it’s a real painting done live at the event, that makes it way cooler
5
u/colnross Jul 02 '25
We don't really have any pictures in our house, but now that we have a 3 year old we have one of those digital frames and seeing her changes over the years flash through it will sometimes catch me in my feelings out of nowhere... We're long away from our grandparents who had like multiple large frames with a bunch of photos of everyone in each!

u/Kizka Jul 02 '25
That's so funny to me. My SO and I did a few photo shoots throughout the years and I printed the pics and they're all over the apartment in addition to many other photos/selfies of us as well as family, friends, pets, etc. The whole apartment is full of pictures everywhere. Never thought that this could be seen as strange by others :)
2
u/HerPetteSaysRoar Jul 02 '25
Oh I’m sure I’m in the minority on this, and it doesn’t usually feel strange when I walk into other peoples’ houses and there are pictures. I just feel weird when I do it. Feels like I’m building a shrine to myself somehow? When it’s not, it’s just preserving memories. It’s definitely a me problem lol. I was really putting myself into this scenario but obviously this painting could just go anywhere in their house, it’s gorgeous.
2
u/BeardedGlass Jul 05 '25
I have seen interior designers talk about personal photos or family portraits in the house.
Well technically it's your house so just hang them wherever you love it.
But for aesthetics, and usually the private sanctity of personal effects, then perhaps you can try putting those family photos in your bedroom. The most intimate space at home.
